The thrill of victory New Westminster Salmonbellies captain Geordie Dean holds the Mann Cup high as he leads his squad around Iroquois Park Arena. The New West team defeated Brooklin Redmen four games to two in the quest for the Canadian Lacrosse Championship. The visitors had three days to revel in their victory before flying back west on Saturday. From page 16 example of over-crowding is in the grade 13 geography course. Rather 'than taking one class per day in the semester, students have been divid- ed whereby they alternate classes. "There's no money left in the budget for extra portables, so I don't know how we are going to handle it," said an exasperated Peel, after presenting an interim report on stu- dent enrolment compiled after the first week of school. Meanwhile, board staff are puzzl- ed over an unexplained drop in the elementary enrolment in various parts of the region, particularly in southern Oshawa, which has forced them to re-assign surplus teachers to other schools in the region. At Meadowcrest Public School in Brooklin, the enrolment is almost identical to that of last year. To chools jammed teachers at the school this year, but this is due to the new stu- dent/teacher ratio in the primary and junior grades, initiated to cut back on the size of classes. Over the next few years, the program will be expanded to include all grades. Total elementary enrolment throughout the region as of September 5 was 31,448 which in- cludes 3,472 kindergarten students. As of September 30 last year, elementary enrolment was 30,664 in- cluding 3,375 kindergarten students. MACKEY & BAILEY BARRISTERS & SOLICITORS Well ... what can you say? | Ny 3 Brooklin Redmen gave it their best, but - their best just wasn't good enough to emerge victorious this year in their quest for the Canadian Lacross Championship and the coveted Mann Cup. "The honour this year went to the New Westminster Salmonbellies in six games. Last year's champion- ship in Vancouver between the same two teams went the full seven games, with Redmen bringing home the cup. The series stood at two games each at the end of last week's action and when the two squads met on Tuesday night, Salmonbellies went ahead with a 10-8 victory. It had taken four previous games, but New West had finally managed to figure out Brooklin"s superb defense. And they quietly went to work carving it up. Redmen jumped on Salmonbellies at the start of the match with goals by Derek Keenan and Andy Perroni to take a 2-0 lead, but New West pounded away scoring three short- handed goals. It looked onimous for the visiting team early in the second period as they picked up a rash of penalties, but even with the two-man advan- tage, Redmen just couldn't popina goal. Salmonbellies meanwhile tallied two short-handed goals within a 40 second time span, and continued building until they won the game. Scoring for Redmen were Keenan with two goals and two assists, John Fusco, who also hit for a pair of goals, Gil Nieuwendyk, Bob Holder, 193 QUEEN ST, PORT PERRY (416) 985-7306 ALL LINES OF GENERAL INSURANCE VICTORIA VG Eee 1 0" 5 Year Annual Interest 9 7/8% Semi-Annually Rates Subject to Change without Notice WHITBY-OSHAWA HONDA 1110 Dundas St. East - Whitby, Ont. Fusco, who was named as the most. valuable player of the game for Redmen was out of the following 'night's game with a broken finger .. possibly a good reason for the team's loss. Fusco is a worker who is missed. Wednesday's game saw Redmen play the best game of the year ... of the best half a game of the year. They got off to a flying start, scor- ing three unanswered goals in the opening frame and added a fourth eight minutes into the second period. Salmonbellies finally got on the boards at the 16:31 mark and add- ed a second goal 16 seconds later, narrowing the Brooklin edge to 4-2 to start the final stanza. lay This was the beginning of y end. It is hard to decipher whether Redmen fell apart, or Salmonbellies played superior, but New West bounced back with two goals early in the third period and although Bill Callan put Redmen back in the lead it was brief as Salmonbellies replied with the next four goals to ice the win. Tom Wreggit turned in a stellar performance for Redmen with two goals. Dale Kernohan, Bill Down, Holder and Callan were the other scorers. Shawn Quinlan of New West and Redmen netminder Wayne Colley were named most valuable players of the game ... Salmonbellies player Geordie Dean was the recipient of the series MVP award. Brooklin Redmen Kevin Van Sickle gave it all he had during the final game for the Mann Cup, but just couldn't pop a goal past The New Westminster netminder.
