Sure, the comparison between the young American school-girl who blew the whistle on her parents cocaine habit is a far cry from what the Nazis openly encourag- ed in Germany 50 years ago. But there is a similarity, and there are ominous under-tones to it. As | see it, the war on illegal drugs should be fought, not in the streets or the homes of the nation, but at the ~ dealers, manufacturer and importer level. Nail these guys to the cross with tough prison terms (20 years, no parole), and watch the supply dry up. This may be a simplistic approach, but sometimes that is the most ef- fective way to get something done. The profits to be made in big-time drug dealing and importing are staggering. I can't for the life of me figure out why our law-makers have failed to impose stiff enough penalties that would make any fool back away. In some countries, the death penalty is invoked for those who deal in drugs. I wonder if they have a problem there? I wonder if the president or prime minister has to declare "war on drugs." Not likely. The war has been ~ won, not with catchy slogans, but tough action. Originating in 1982, this five-man quartet --- yes, that's right, a five- man quartet -- brings with their "outrageous strings" a wonderful spirit of fun while they supply something for everyone in their au- dience. Primarily created to play educational concerts, and to make music accessible and entertaining for all, the group soon found they "had something special on their hands," as Mr. Solomon put it. Serious music with a comic twist becarane a sensation. The prodigious talent of these per- formers has been demonstrated in- dividually in their performance with such notables as Peggy Lee, Lena Horne, Hagood Hardy, the Toronto Symphony, Gordon Lightfoot, Sylvia Tyson, the Hamilton Philharmonic and the Canadian Opera Company. They have also made innumerable radio and television appearances as well as done studio work and recordings. Now, collectively, Quintessence brings to string performance freshness, brashness, originality, and just plain fun. The group has been termed dynamic and flam- boyant as they delight their au- diences with everything from Bach to Beatles, Ghostbusters on the cello to a lesson in how to fiddle by a country-style banjo player. Con- trasts abounding, everything from early classical to pop is performed with flair and humour. Even some original numbers by composer Bridges, or a toreador style Malaguena, help to round out a quint-essential evening with this unique 'quartet.' Quintessence will -be appearing "near you' -- at Town Hall 1873. Locate those ducats, if you are, luckily, a series subscriber. A few single tickets may currently be available at Irwin Smith's for this real "musical treat' on October the fourth. Do as Long John says -- "go!"
