3 : : § x 9% cna NDP's to fight waste dump Durham Region and district New Democrats have joined the fight against a proposed nuclear waste dump in the Town of Newcastle or Hope Township. Last night the executive of the South Central Ontario NDP Area Council unanimously endorsed a proposal to support citizen groups in Tyrone and Starkville in their bat- tle with Eldorado Resources Ltd., over plans to establish a dump in either community. Wilf Day, president of the Durham-Northumberland NDP Riding Association, has demanded that the Canadian government take responsibility for finding a suitable location for the dump. "We call on the Mulroney govern- ment to take responsibility through the AECL (Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd.) for a search for a suitable site, the government has abdicated its responsibility by sloughing-off this job on Eldorado." The Crown corporation announc- ed last month that it was consider- ing Tyrone and Starkville as possi- ble locations for a dump for nuclear waste from its refinery in Port Hope. Eldorado has been using a 25-acre site in Port Granby but that is scheduled to close later this year. "Brian Mulroney promised in the last election campaign that no such dump would be located near Lake Ontario, New Democrats will not let him break that promose," vowed Day. "Waste dumps should not be located where they will have a substantial social, economic or en- vironmental impact. Radioactive waste must be monitored, not buried and forgotten." This has been divided into 2 groups meeting the needs of the children. Here they learn about Jesus, songs, make crafts and play games. Infants and toddlers will be well looked after by our competent nursery personnel. This is a Bible study for everyone. It's a good time to meet new people and make lasting friendships. Our guest speaker will be pastor Bart Van Eyk on this first Thursday morning. Singing & Games are planned. A special 'puppet show" will be shown to all the children.
