Region paves way for housing At the last meeting of regional council members paved the way for a development proposal at Nestleton Station by passing a planning staff recommendation without comment. On August 7, the Township of ScuZog forwarded to region a pro- posal to amend the Nestleton Station Development Plan. The ammend- ment proposes to make the necessary adjustments to the boun- dary of the hamlet to permit the con- struction of an additional 32 single- family dwellings in the southwest quadrent. Nestleton Station is identified as a hamlet for growth in the Durham Region Official Plan. Rural residen- tial development is encouraged to locate within the hamlets of the region and particularily those iden- tified for growth. The Plan allows growth hamlets to expand to a max- imum of 150 units, and the approval of the Nestleton Station Develop- ment Plan would bring the total number of existing and proposed dwellings here to approximately 133, well within the guidelines. Through a review of available soils and servicing information, and discussions with the Department of Health Services, Planning Commis- sioner, Dr. Mofeed Michael stated, "it would appear that in conjunction with the large minimum lot size re- quirements of the existing develop- ment plan, set at three-quarters of an acre, individual septic tanks can be accommodated in this area.'"' He did point out, however, that the pro- posal for 32 new lots represented the maximum number of units permit- ted and the actual number will be determined through detailed soil testing at the time of the subdivision application. Scugog clerk-administrator Earl Cuddie had forwarded a letter to regional council advising that his council members were in favour of the proposed development and at- tached one letter of opposition received from a Nestleton resident ~ and a petition signed by over 20 other families in the area who sup- ported the developments.
