In celebration, Scugog Memorial Public Library in Port Perry will be displaying a selection of Peace Ban- ners that have been mad by groups and individuals from across Canada. The banners were originally part of the Peace Ribbon that began as a dream by one very remarkable woman, Justine Merritt from Denver Colorado. She imagined that if she could organize people from each U.S. state to create a panci depicting what they "couldn't bear to lose" in a nuclear war, the resulting "ribbon" could surround the Pentagon on the 40th anniver- sary of the bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Her dream of 2000 panels from U.S. citizens grew into 20,000 segments from people in more than a dozen countries including Canada. That "Ribbon" surrounded all the monuments in Washington D.C. on that very special day. The banners have been lovingly stitched and painted and quilted by parents and children, school classes and college students, church groups and cub scouts. In fact the Ribbon became the single most gigantic sewing event in human history. You are invited to share the love in these creations at the Library, Oct. 14-18 and during Public Library Week, Oct. 21-25. Please extend this invitation to members of your group. From Port Perry, the collec- tion moves on to Calgary, Alberta. Remember, United Nations Day 18 October 24.
