-- EE ia ee a a i a ame 24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 7, 1986 Sports Mood optimistic despite two close losses in exhibition games Season opener Thursday for Jr. C MoJacks The sparring matches are over for the Port Perry MoJacks. The main event will start this Thursday night in Port Hope as the Central Junior C regular schedule gets underway. Despite two weekend exhibition losses to Lindsay and Ajax, there is a mood of optimism in the MoJack camp. And for good reason. On Sunday Frank Guarini of the MoJacks gets off a wrist shot during Sun- day's match between Port Perry and Ajax. He's one of several players battling for a spot on the roster as the Junior C MoJacks get ready for the regular season opener this Thursday night in Port Hope. Despite two weekend losses by scores of 4-3 and 3-2, the MoJacks have looked very impressive in the pre-season games and there is reason for optimism this winter. She defeated Leanne Dick of the University of Toronto by scores of 6-4, 7-5, and then had an easier time against Brock University's Cathy Thompson with two wins of 6-1 and 6-2. In the doubles competition, she teamed with Jane Lang to defeat a University of Toronto pair by scores of 6-2, 64. In other recent matches, Leslie defeated Jane McKinnel of Guelph 6-3, 6-0 an. won her doubles over a night at the Scugog Arena, the Mo- Jacks went toe-to-toe with a tough, aggressive and quick skating Ajax Axemen squad but came up just short on the tail end of a 4-3 score. As pre-season games go, this one was a real gem, a highly entertain- ing affair with plenty of hard hitting, scoring chances at both ends of the rink and just enough chippiness to remind players on both sides that hockey is a contact sport. Ajax is a new entry in the Central Junior C league this season and it appears as if this team will be tough. The Axemen got on the board first with a power play goal early in the opening period, a tip-in that MoJack netminder Jeff Lynch had not a chance to stop. The MoJacks went to work on the power play mid-way through the period to even the game at 1-1, and it was defenseman Darren Nesbitt who pulled the trigger with a rocket from 30 feet out. Nesbitt, in his se- cond season with the MoJacks had a strong game at both ends of the rink and was very effective rushing the puck out of his own zone. Axemen went ahead 2-1 on a - power play goal in the second, and used the man advantage again in the third to take a 3-1 lead. Chris Nicholson got one back, but Ajax opened a two goal bulge with a short-handed marker when the en- tire MoJack team got caught up ice. Nicholson then netted his second of the contest in the final two minutes as the MoJacks pressed In goal for the MoJacks, Brian MoJack netminder Brian Tarelton got a bit of help from his defense on this play as Darren Nesbitt goes down to block a shot during Junior Guelph team by the scores of 64,60. C exhibition play Sunday night at the Scugog 7 \ Tarleton and Jeff Lynch split the duties. Tarleton played last season with the Uxbridge Bruins and it ap- pears as if he will be signed along with Port Perry native Paul Goreski to handle the net-minding chores this year. The Ajax-Port Perry match was a tough hockey game. There were 30 minor penalties called and while tempers flared several times, there was no out-break of fisticuffs. On Friday night in Lindsay, the MoJacks again played pretty good hockey but came up losing the match by one goal on a 3-2 core. Craig Menzies netted one in the first before Lindsay clicked for three un- answered markers in the middle frame. Rob Phinney found the range mid-way through the third to make the score 3-2 and that's the way it ended. The MoJacks sport a pre-season record of two wins and three losses. The only poor game the team had in the five encounters was a 16-3 drubbing in their first outing against Ajax more than three weeks ago. The improvement since then has been more than noticeable. The MoJacks have 16 players signed to cards as of Sunday night and will be taking a close look at several others before adding to the roster. If the pre-season games are any indication, MoJacks fans are going to see some exciting hockey this winter at the Scugog Arena. The game last Sunday evening against Louis Trudel 625 (248, 223). The team appears to have a solid blue line corps and plenty of speed and hustle along the forward lines. With Tarelton and Goreski, the Mo- Jacks have two net-minders with solid Junior C experience in this league. One weakness that showed up Sunday night against Ajax was the lack of a 'finishing touch" around the opposition net. The MoJacks missed numerous good scoring chances. But that problem should be corrected once coaches George Burnett and Ed Olsen get the lines established and the players get us- ed to each other as a unit. Playing in the Crowley Division this season, the majority of the Mo- Jack games will be against Little Britain, Uxbridge and Lindsay. Ux- bridge has been hot in pre-season play without a loss while Little Bri- tain and Lindsay have developed a traditional tough rivalry with Port Perry over the past few seasons. This Thursday night in Port Hope, the MoJacks will be playing for keeps as they meet the Panthers in their season opener. On October 17, " the MoJacks will make the long road trip to Wellington to play one of the new entries in the loop. And on Sunday, October 19, the home opener for the MoJacks will be at the Scugog Arena (7:30 face off) and there will be something ex- tra for local Junior C fans as there are some special opening night festivities in the works.
