Ontario residents are being warn- ed to ensure their home heating systems are operating properly - before turning on the furnace for the first time this season. "Have the whole system in-- spected, especially if you haven't already done so this year,' advises Monte Kwinter, Minister of Con- sumer and Commercial Relations. Homeowners who have had their heating systems converted to natural gas may have to get metal chimney liners installed if the bricks are crumbling or show signs of staining due to moisture condensation. The Canada Mortgage and Hous- ing Corporation (CMHC) blames malfunctioning heating systems for about 25 carbon monoxide-related deaths in Canada every year. Dur- ing the past year the Fuels Safety Branch of MCCR has investigated 31 carbon monoxide-related incidents in Ontario, involving 1 death. Twenty-nine year old Kelly Goreski won a bronze medal, but he's quick to explain that winning a bronze does not mean you've finish- lethal odorless gas -- can leak into homes for a variety of reasons. Aside from blocked chimneys, cracks in fur- nace heat exchangers can also be the culprits. On certain types of boilers the heat exchanger surface may become clogged with debris. These and other physical problems should show up during regular in- spections. Do not use your furnace until any necessary repairs have been completed. I'uels Safety Branch Director, ed in third place. The winners of the Enduro were judged on time, and the top times were awarded gold medals. Those that finished in the next category down were awarded silvers, and. those that finished in the furthest category down were awarded bronze. Many racers didn't finish the gruelling race at all. ""The Italians won it, of course," Kelly says about the results. '"When it's set up in your country, you make it so you win." Overall, the Canadians placed 13th out of 18 teams, during the Italian race held September 8 to 13. More than 400 dirt bike racers from around the world entered and 15 percent of those riders couldn't complete the tricky course. Goat paths, barely wider than the wheels of the bikes, twisted on the rocky edge of mountain sides, where, if riders made one slip, they would tumble hundreds of feet. But goat paths weren't the only challenges Kelly and his team mates had to overcome. Torrential rain, cold, mud, pedestrians and traffic were all concerns riders met on a regular basis. One competitor, a Japanese man named Toshi ('He was the Japanese team. One guy!" Kelly laughs), ran into an oncoming car head on. "There wasn't a spoke left on his wheel," he recalls. In that accident, Toshi hurt his leg and cracked his ribs, but was lucky to be alive. Kelly never had those kinds of problems, but he came close on several occasions. "I betcha there's 18 zillion close calls every day in that race," he says. Although he's safely home again after his hair-raising trip to Italy, the dirt bike racing season is hard- ly over and Kelly plans to fit in several .more races in Ontario before the first snow flies. Fortunately, there's not too many goats around here. Bob Clendining warns that a pro- blem known as back drafting can also occur even if there are no physical faults .in 'the furnace of chimney. Back drafting is the rever- sal of air flow through the venting system. In tightly sealed homes, air can be drawn down the chimney, through the furnace and into the house when the fireplace, kitchen fan, central vacuum cleaner or other air-exhausting appliances are operated. If the furnace is running, by Brenua Lefort There were a lot of bright and eager young faces at the Uxbridge Arena as the exhibition season got 'Novice squad off to a great start with Uxbridge victory my Chambers, No.5 - Jeremy Geer, No.8 - Ryan Williams, No.9 - Kenton LeFort, No.10 - Sandy Mark, No.11 exhaust gases may be prevented from rising up the chimney and could be spilled into the house. When recycled through the burner, the waste gases from deadly carbon monoxide. "Back drafting can be caused by exhaust fans, fires in a fireplace or a combination of things that are ex- hausting a lot of air from the house," Clendining explains. "With today's tightly sealed homes, when the demand on the air supply is heavy it can only be satisfied by drawing air through the chimney. You can have problems if the fur- nace turns on and cannot reverse the flow again." The symptoms of carbon monox- ide poisoning are dizziness, nausea, headaches and weakness. If your family is experiencing any of these signs, yet the annual furnace inspec- tion doesn't uncover any problems, back drafting could be the culprit. Try opening a window when using the fireplace or other appliances that use lots of air, Clendining sug- gests, but if in doubt call a qualified contractor. Remember, homeowners are responsible for seeing that their fur- naces are properly maintained. SSLLUUMP That's the sound of poor posture! Look in the mirror and see yourself as other see you.
