12 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 21, 1986 YelvertonUCW news Yelverton U.C.W. met Oct. 2nd at 10 a.m. in the church basement. Eileen Genereaux and Vera Staples served coffee, cheese and loaves. Our meeting opened with the Ode. Maureen Moore, our President read a poem "Simple Things." Mandy Robinson read a story about an old man gathering starfish. Same in life, it seems so significant what each can do, but if we all do something, what a difference it can make. Mandy led in prayers. Fif- teen answered the Roll Call when more lovely articles were handed in for our bazaar, which is to be held at our Roast Beef Dinner, Oct. 13th. Minutes were read and approved. Corrie Malcolm gave the treasurer's report showing that we cleared $72 at the Kim Ball financial night. Eileen Malcolm gave the Friendship report. Thank you's were read from Sue Bonsteel, Gail Prouse and Evelyn Dilling. Mary Moore gave the committee's report for jobs for Thanksgiving Day and a long baking list. Moved by Eileen Malcolm and seconded by Mary Moore that we will give $1000 to the Church Treasurer. Offering $13.80. November meeting at Carol Gray's home with Carol and Gwen Gray as hostesses. The empty pool is a sure sign that nothing but cold weather awaits us. Island Women's Institute news by Connie Haigh The October meeting of the Scugog Island ./omen's Institute was fairly well attended, with the president, Barb Ross presiding. Roll Call was in the form of replies to the question, "How did you spend Thanksgiving?"' Alva Thompson, Jane King and Barb Ross had attended the seminar at Goodwood on Women's Financial Planning, when Kim Ball of Im- perial Life Insurance Company was the speaker. Barb cited the main aspects of the seminar, as financial planning pertains to women. A donation to the World Food Day was approved. After the business meeting the programme was convened by the Agriculture and Canadian In- dustries group under the leadership of Penny Pettypiece, who introduc- ed Mr. Earl Whitaker of Whitaker Farms as the speaker. Mr. ~ Whitaker's topic was "Pick Your Own Fruit and Vegetables" -- grow- ing, fertilization, maintenance, spraying and harvesting of these crops. As with all farm crops, weather, insects and disease have a profound influence on the growing of fruit and vegetables. After his talk, Mr. Whitaker answered MEMBER ONTARIO FUNERAL .
