And they did it the hard way, p Dave Jackson, representing the MoJack sponsor, Mother Jackson's of Port Perry had the honour of doing the ceremonial face-off as the MoJacks hosted Lindsay Muskies for the home opener Sunday night at the Scugog Arena. At left twice coming from behind to edge the Lindsay Muskies 7-6 in a tough, grinding and at times chippy contest. Dave Burnett, up from the Port Midgets for this game, led the scor- 145 Li ing parade with a hat trick, in- cluding what proved to be the game winner mid-way in the third period. He also set up a goal by MoJack captain Andy Sutch. Other marksmen for the MoJacks is Lindsay captain Dave Kearns with MoJack cap- tain Andy Sutch. A large crowd was treated to a fast hard-hitting contest with MoJacks coming out on top by a score of 7-6. It was the first win in three starts for Port Perry. Atom One's are off to a flying start The Port Perry Atom 1's have got- ten out of the blocks quickly this year registering 4 wins and a tie in 5 exhibition games against Oshawa LNHL teams. The team is once again this year sponsored by Neil and Noreen Malcolm of Malmont Farms and we appreciate this continued support. Under the leadership of Coach Don Steele, Manager Sandy Gar- vock and Assistant Coach Don Harper the 1986-87 team is made up of Jeff Andrews, Gavin Cochrane, Steve Desautels, Duane Empr- ingham, Chad Garvock, Scott Heasman, Adam Johnston, Chad Kearns, Peter King, Sean McEnaney, Lindsay Parry, Dave Pashley, Mike Pashley, Andrew Pereman and Mike Sluggett. On October 4 at the Oshawa Civic, Chad Kearns scored the eventual game winner against the Major Black Hawks, off a nice set-up from Dave Pashley and Mike Sluggett. This broke up a tight 2-0 game and launched Port to a 5 goal third and a 7-2 victory. Adam Johnston had 2 goals, Steve Desautels, Jeff Andrews, Dave Pashley and Gavin Cochrane 1 each. Other assists went to Duane Empr- ingham with 2, Sean McEnaney, Scott Heasman and Lindsay Parry 1 each. Friday, October 10 in Port the Ma- jor Red Wings recovered from a 2 goal deficit to salvage a 2-2 tie. Chad Garvock drove in on a break to open Port's scoring unassisted, then Dave Pashley scored from Chad Kearns before the Red Wings mounted their comeback. October 11 at Manvers Arena, against the Minor Canadians, Sean McEnaney's first of two was the winner as Mike Pashley and An- drew Pereman shared the shutout in a 6-0 win. Dave Pashley, Steve Desautels, Adam Johnston and Scott Heasman scored the other goals. Dave added 3 assists, Chad Garvock has 2 while Scott Heasman and Peter King had 1 each. Back home October 17 against the Black Hawks again, Chad Gar- vock's persistance paid off when he stole the puck in the corner and his centering pass was deflected into the net. This got the Malmont Farm boys going and started 4 straight goals and led to a comeback 6-4 win. Sean McEnaney's second of the game was the winner, with Steve Desautels, Duane Empringham and Dave Pashley scoring once each. Dave and Duane each added an assist and Lindsay Parry, Chad Kearns, Adam Johnston and Gavin Cochrane had one as well. On October 19, a rematch with the Red Wings at the Civic saw Port score 2 goals in each of the first two periods and go on to a 5-1 win. Dave Pashley's hard shot that the goalie got a piece of but could not stop was the winner, assisted by Duane Em- pringham. Duane added a goal of his own, Sean McEnaney had 2 and Adam Johnston had the other. Dave had an assist along with Gavin Cochrane, Peter King and Chad Kearns. Along with a potent scoring attack the Malmont Farms Atoms have been receiving excellent defence from Gavin, Peter, Jeff and Mike as well as strong goaltending from An- drew and Mike. This combination looks like it should lead to a suc- cessful season for the Green and White. First league game is Friday, Oc tober 24 at 8:00 p.m. when Lindsay visits Port. were Sean Bradley, Chris Nicholson, Rob Baker, who turned in a strong two-way performance. He too was up for this game from the Midget squad. . For the visiting Muskies, who are winless in two games so far, Scott Hamilton and Ed Leeuwenburg each had a pair of markers with singles going to Darryl Burrows and Steve Black. MoJacks spotted the Muskies an early 2-0 lead in the first period, but fought back on goals by Bradley and Nicholson to knot the score after 20 minutes. The teams traded goals in the middle frame and at 2:59 of the third, Port Perry finally went ahead 5-4 when Sutch found the range from in front of Lindsay netminder Rob Topper. Less than a minute later, Burnett made some good moves from the left side to give the Mo- Jacks a 6-4 lead. But Lindsay wasn't finished yet as they clicked for a power play marker, then tied the game at the 9:45 mark on a two on one break. Burnett got the game winner at 11:40 on the power play when he took passes from Sutch and Craig Menzies and beat Topper cleanly from 25 feet out with a low shot to the stick side. MoJacks then had to endure - several minor penalties, but they held on to preserve the victory. Port Perry owned a fairly wide margin in the play especially through the second period and out- shot the visitors 38 to 22. Paul Goreski in net for Port Perry seem- ed to have a bit of trouble on one Muskie goal early in the game, but he was outstanding late in the third period making several tough saves as Muskies put the power on with a man advantage. In a game filled with minor penalties, the Muskies could manage just one power play marker, while six of the seven Mo- Jack goals came with a man advantage. The Muskies took 18 minors, and Port Perry was nabbed for 18 trips to the box as well. Lindsay captain Dave Kearns was tossed from the game in the first period for arguing a double minor against himself. The game featured a lot of heavy hitting on both sides, and as the score might indicate, there was a lot of wide open end to end action. Rob Phinney of the MoJacks suffered a charley horse and Clay Dempsey left the ice very groggy after crashing into the boards at the end of the second period. Neither player saw action in the third period. The MoJacks were without their big defensemen Darren Nesbitt, who was hit with a two game suspension for fighting in Port Hope. He'll be back in action this coming week. Although he didn't figure in any of the MoJack goals, forward Greg Warriner turned in a gritty perfor- mance in a checking and penalty killing role. He skated miles, took some hard hits, but played it tough along t..e boards and in the corners. Rick Wilson also had a strong game for the MoJacks, carrying the puck well and earning three assists. The MoJacks now have one win to go along with two defeats. They lost 5-3 to Port Hope October 9, then ran into some hot goal-tending last week in Wellington and came home Fri- day night on the short end of an 8-2 score. However, the MoJacks could end up with two points from the Port Hope game as the team has lodged an official protest claiming Port Hope dressed a forward who was under suspension for an exhibition game fight. The team swings back into action this Wednesday evening, October 22 in Brighton, then will meet the Port Hope Panthers this Sunday night (Oct. 26) at the Scugog Arena. If the MoJack protest is upheld, it could add an extra dimension to the game this coming Sunday night. The Mo- Jacks will have to find some way to contain Panther captain Tony 'Wakely, a smooth skater and great puck handler. Nobroomball surprises Week 4 saw no surprises in the local league as Goreski's, Blackstock and Utica all came out winners. Goreski's 6 - Emmerson's 2 Goreski's continued their winning streak as they dumped Emmerson's 6-2. They rolled up a 5-1 lead by the end of the first led by Dave Dickson's 2 goals. Ken Fraser got the game rolling as he knotted one just 39 seconds into the contest on an unassisted effort. Bruce Woodrow then assisted on Dickson's first and one by Ed Sexton. Emmerson's goal came from the broom of Bill Gerber, aided by Neil Guthrie. Goreski's next two came from Dickson assisted by Bill St. John, and Sexton from Woodrow. With 1:42 to play Sexton got his hat trick aided by Woodrow who got his fourth assist of the affair. The scoring was rounded out as John & Bill Gerber teamed up with 27 seconds to play. Blackstock 4 - Oddfellows 1 Blackstock drew first blood mid- way through the opening frame as Cordell Keuning assisted on a marker by Phil Archer. Just 1:32 later while on the powerplay, Ken Bryant deflected in a Steve Robinson shot to tie the game. It was short-lived as Ron Redman fed Ron Wagg to give Blackstock a 2-1 after the first. In the final frame Archer got his second assisted by Wayne McGuigan, and Gord Bryans netted the final score unaided. Utica 7 - B&L Donuts 0 Utica got their goals in bunches today as in the first they netted 3 within a span of 2:00 minutes. The first goal came from the broom of Ian Down aided by Key Lynde. Lynde then went on a scoring rampage as he got the natural hat trick scoring the next three in a row to give Utica a 4-0 lead after the first. lan Down and Dermot Doyle picked up assists on 2 of them. In the final frame Lynde picked up his fifth point of the game as he assisted on a goal by Kevin Ibbitt- son. Ibbittson then helped Murray Down make the score 6-0. The final score went to Ian Down orn an unassisted effort. Rick Lees picked up the shutout. ,
