i Hr di ode ad Ty anda 16 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 28, 1786 Woman battles 'pollution' Mary Johansen hates to be in the limelight. She hates publicity of any kind, but she is willing to put up with any negative aspects to get her message across. You see, this Brooklin resident is waging war on pornography and will use any method plausible to rid society of what she calls a *'pollution to mind, body and soul." The mother of five started her cruisade against all pornography in 1974 and has since become a member of Canadians for Decency and REAL Women, two groups who are constantly fighting to rid com- munity stores of porno magazines. The two groups emphasised the phrase strength in numbers as they were responsible for getting porno magazines out of 711 stores, the Port Perry IGA and their most suc- cessful coup, Shoppers Drug Mart chains. . But there are still many stores that carry these offensive magazines, including two in Brooklin, and that is what has Mary concerned. A check showed that Jacs Milk at Winchester and Ander- son carried 32 and Beckers on Baldwin Street carried a large number. These including such great reading as Playboy, Playgirl, Video X, Oui, X-Rated Avenue, Cinema Blue, Hustler, Turn On and Girls. It bothers Mary that the owner of Jacs has stated he would remove the magazines from his shelves ever since the store opened, but to date, they are still there, and as a matter of fact, are increasing in numbers. "It's all greed and love of the almighty dollar," said Mary, adding it was common knowledge that the porno industry was Maffia controll- ed. "Kids of any age can buy these magazines and there are even por- nographic comics now in 'the States...it is a community respon- sibility to get rid of this." Mary is a nurse by profession and has administered her duties in x § / ¥ Brooklin Library was bustling last Wednesday as local several jails. She states she knows of perverted acts between inmates as a result of the porno pictures in magazines and on the walls of their cells. She has written letters, and received replies from all levels of government, including Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, Justice Minister John Crosbie and Health Minister Russell Wunken. Although she is pleased that the porno laws are now being questioned, she feels most politicians are by nature '""fence-sitters" and does not an- ticipate any quick changes in the law to take place. Mary has also contacted all the churches in Brooklin, and hopes she will receive their support to rid the village of pornographic material. She has kept newspaper clippings related to pornography and points to the fact that all radical sex murders committed have had a direct link with pornographic magazines, which were found in the homes of the offender. One particular instance that had her really upset was a story concer- ning a nine-year-old boy who was found guilty of the sex slaying of an eight-month-old baby girl. On the witness stand, he admitted he was trying to copy the pictures he had seen in his mother's porno magazine. '"This is so sad," said Mary. "But Kinsmen Wheelchair athelete Rick Hansen's Man in Motion tour has made its way into Ontario and will roll into the Durham Region on Sunday. The brave young man. who will wheel his way 40,073 kilometers around the world in the hopes of A LS erm residents attended a dessert tea to help celebrate Ontario Public Library Week. The library is also offering a draw on Peter C. Newman's latest book, Company of Adventurers. Librarian Valerie Garland, right, offered some refreshments to Brooklin residents Marg Steven: 1 and Annette Cowan. apart from that young boy being found guilty, why wasn't the mother charged"... why wasn't the person who sold the magazine, or the ones that published it charged?...they were just as guilty of having con- tributed to the death of that baby." Mary admits she gets upset and carried away when it comes to the subject of pornography, and says she is always getting in trouble with her doctor because her blood pressure sometimes zooms, but she is not about to give up her fight. "To have so many of these porno magazines in a small community like Brooklin is terrible and the on- ly way to get them out is to boycott the businesses that sell them," she said. '"The owners are clever business men and if they realize they are losing buisness because they carry the magazines, they will soon get rid of them." But she realizes the falability of human nature and understands it will take a long time to rid Brooklin of its "dirty books."' But she leaves readers with one final thing to think about, and hopes she will get some backing in her cruisade. "It's your school...your town...your kids...do something about it,'"' she asks. "The only one who can do something about getting rid of this pornography in our village is you." McDonalds restaurant on Thickson Road will be joining its sister stores across Canada on Monday, November 3, in celebrating Rick Hansen Day. The store will donate $1 from the purchase of a Big Mac towards the Man in Motion cause for research into spinal defects. The cost is $50 per person or $75 per couple for those interested. Hansen will start his trek towards Whitby about 6 a.m. Sunday morn- ing, passing along Highway 2 (Dun- das Street) where he will be accom- panied by Kinsmen from Brooklin, Port Perry and Whitby. There will be six tractors, each holding dona- tion barrels that will accompany Hansen right into Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto. At the four corners in Whitby (Dundas and Brock) will be signs of welcome and congratulations, made by the Kinsmen from Brooklin, Port and Whitby. Each will bear the signature of local residents. Brooklin and District Kinsmen Larry Morden said these signs would be taken to local schools for children to sign. He added the students would not be asked to give a donation to the cause as per Hansen's wishes, adding he hoped their parents might be able to spare a little though. The Kinsmen are also sponsoring a pledge drive while Hansen is' wheeling through Durham Region. Sponsors are asked to pledge $50 or $25 per kilometer. Canadian president George Cohen initially said his chain would . sponsor Hansen for $100,000 but became so involved with the courageous young man that he has since upped the anti to $250,000. To accomplish this, the Whitby McDonalds, along with all other sister-stores throughout Canada, will be holding a Rick Hansen Day on Monday, November 3. For each Big Mac sold, McDonalds will donate $1 towards the marathon. The manager of the Whitby store, Bob Smith, has also placed a dona- tion bottle on the counter for those who wish to contribute without purchasing. Rick Hansen was born August 26, 1957 in British Columbia, where he still resides. When he was 15 years old, he was involved in a motor vehi- cle accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Undeterred by his '"handicap,"' Hansen was deter- mined to live a "normal" life and in 1976 was the first disabled person to be enrolled in the physical education facility at the University of British Columbia. He went on to become a member of the BC Wheelchair Volleyball Team that earned three national championships. He was also the driving force behind the wheelchair basketball team who won five national titles in six years. Hansen was named the National Disabled Athelete of the Year in 1979-80 and 82 and in 1983 shared the Outstanding Canadian Athelete of the Year award with Wayne Gretzky.
