Mr fot, TN ER a 8 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 28, 1986 If you've had psychiatric problems, CIVP wants to help you by Margaret Rowland People who are under emotional stress or who have been recently discharged from psychiatric hospital need not be alone. The C.LLV.P. wants to help. C.1.V.P. stands for Community In- volvement and Volunteer Program. Volunteers in the am assist and help to develop life skills for those who have been referred to the C.1.V.P. by physicians, Public Health, and other health profes- sionals. However, the client must want the assistance of a volunteer, it is not forced upon him or her. The program revolves solely around the client. His physical, emo- tional, and intellectual needs are recognized and looked after. The client decides what he wants 'or himself. Volunteers, who can be working, retired, or homemakers, are screen- ed befor~ beginning an intensive 30 hour training course. The volunteers learn to be attentive, how to observe, listen, and respond to what people say and how they feel. They receive information about psychiatric rehabilitation and get an overview of mental illness. Nell Marshall, co-ordinator for the C.1.LV.P. in Scugog, says in February there will be an advanc- ed training course introduced. This course will be 48 hours long and will be held at Whitby Psychiatric Hospital where volunteers will take part in lectures and will receive cer- tificates following the course. Volunteers must be actively involv- Ml = {im ANNIVERSARY] © SCUGOG CHORAL SOCIETY BE COOP \:% RATION WEHTH TAMSMWEHEMARK MUSIC THIBRARY IN PRESENTS" , FAR Books and Lyrics by: ALAN JAY LERNER Music by: FREDERICK LOEWE Adapted trom George Bernard Shaw's Play and Gabrial Pascal's Motion Picture "Pygmalion" Director: NINA FOXALL Musical Director: TOM MILLAR a TOWN HALL 1873 1986 BD ADDY ed in the C.I.LV.P. and must be screened. Mrs. Marshall stresses that the volunteer is not there to replace a professional. The volunteer only provides help and acts as a role model to the client. Volunteers and their clients meet with a supervisor after 6 months to review .and re-evaluate the situa- tion. The client provides input after the termination of the case and gives an assessment of the service. Self-support therapy groups, under the direction of Whitby Psych, meet each week to provide support for others. Thursday mornings from 9:15 to noon, meetings are held at the Anglican Church of the Ascen- sion in Port Perry and are held at the Daheim Nursing Home in Ux- bridge, Monday afternoons from one to three. A drop-in program is held Wednesday atternoons from one to three at the Scout Hall on Lilla Street which is open to anyone feeling lonely, isolated, or is suffer- ing from mental illness. Transpor- tation is provided by Community Care for those who can't get there. Volunteers are needed, so call the C.1.V.P,, situated in the Communi- ty Care Office, at 985-8461 or call Ux- bridge at 852-7445. Volunteers must have helpful attitudes, respect for confidentiality, and must be open to learning training. Volunteers must also be prepared for a six month commitment subsequent to training. Becoming a volunteer for the C.1.V.P. may be the most rewarding experience of vour life. Nell Marshall, coordinator of the C.I.V.P. is looking for volunteers for what could be the most rewarding volunteer work .anyone has ever done. See story for details.
