Well you can be assured they don't look like this group .... except on Halloween. The event was the Halloween party for the Intermediate grades last Thuys- day and the rules were clear. No costume, no entry. Although all of the costumes were excellent, this trip won top marks for their creations. Troy Jackson was the hands-down winner with his hula- girl, followed by Leighanne Porter-Salveterra in second place for her Cyndi Lauper look-alike. By the way, under those tacky s'inglasses is Grant Cole, a great sport, if not the best dressed "tourist" ever seen. ei - DENTURE THERAPY CLINIC Open Weekdays including SUNDAY! -- By Appointment Only -- 214 Dundas St. E., WHITBY 668-7797 66 Brock St.W., 194 King St. W., UXBRIDGE 852-5291 OSHAWA 579-8752 | MAY [ HELP YOU? 601 DUNDAS ST.WEST. A study conducted by the Institute for Environmental Research in the city's north end has recommended a 15,000 square foot gymnasium and multi-purpose building for the North'Oshawa Park on Nonquon Road. Councillor Armstrong has gone so far as to state this could be the beginning of a major athletic complex at the site. "We could see a pool and another rink here," he said. "There isn't a pool north of King Street, and if the need's there, it would be a logical spot." A city-wide recreational study, completed by the same consultant, is due in January and is expected to pinpoint exactly what facilities are re- quired and where in Oshawa. PICKERING The trial of four Toronto hospitals, charged with dumping human waste at the Brock West Landfill site in Pickering will begin again this week after a four-month adjournment. " Due to the death of Provincial Court Judge J.D. Adison, who was presiding over testimony during the month of June, a new trial was ordered for St. Michael's, Women's College, York-Finch and Wellesley Hospitals to start November 3 in Toronto's old City Hall. Representatives of the four hospitals had entered not guilty pleas to _charges of illegally dumping pathalogical waste at the Pickering site dur- ing a two week period in September of last year. During that time, operating room wastes, to include operating room bandages and human parts were found in garbage bags that had broken open at the dump, which is owned by Metropolitan Toronto. The trial is expected to take three weeks. 3 AJAX Students at Denis O'Connor Catholic School have collected about $30,000 from their 12th annual Doc-a-thon held September 24. A teacher at the school, Bettli Oberhansli, who is also a member of the walk committee, said that the 1,100 walkers took in pledges amoun- ting to some $45,000 this year. The 22-kilometer walk is held annually at the school to help defray the costs of the grade 13 program, which is not funded through the government. Catholic funding has been extended to grade 12, but grade 13 students are considered to be attending a private school and as such are required to pay a $1,000 tuition. Money raised through the Doc-a-thon helps keep this cost down. : The money is turned over to the school's Partners Committee which consists of three trustees of the Durham Separate School Board, staff members, and representatives of the archdiocese. The committee puts the money in the bank and administers it. The committee will disband next year with the extension of Catholic funding by the province to include grade 13. LITTLE BRITAIN A district court judge used the case of a Little Britain youth to warn people that anyone who climbs behind the wheel and driving while intox- icated can look forward to a stiff jail sentence. Judge Donald Lawson issued the warning when he sentenced Steven Guymer, 19, of Little Britain, a first-time offender, to a three-year peniten- tiary term for the killing of two people in a head-on crash in 1985. The judge said the stiff sentences will be doled out to impaired drivers regardless of their backgrounds and age. . ~ Guymer was found guilty of two counts of criminal negligence caus- ing death, and impaired driving, by a district court judge on September 19. Prosecutor Doug Brown, told the court Guymer, who had been drink- ing, was eastbound on Reg. Road 21, when he crossed into the westbound lane just below the crest of a hill east of Reg. Road 23, and slammed head- on into a car driven by Margaret Parsons, 62, of Aurora. Both she and her passenger, brother-in-law James Parsons of Tonawanda, N.Y, lost their lives as a result of the accident. A blood sample taken from Guymer showed blood alcohol readings of more than twice the legal limit. OSHAWA An Oshawa grandmother, who ran an escort service, has been fined $750 after pleading guilty to living off the avails of prostitution. Shirley Marie Andersdn, 47, was charged last spring after an under- cover police officer arranged to have sex with a woman at the escort ser- vice operated by Anderson. Prosecutor Doug Brown said the undercover officer phoned Anderson's Centre Street escort service on the pretext of hiring a woman to dance at a stag party. . Brown said a woman named **Jasmine' who spoke to the officer agreed to dance and be the door prize. When they agreed on a $300 price, she told the officer Anderson would get half the fee. When the officer went to the escort service to meet **Jasmine" he ar- ranged through Anderson to have sex with **Jasmine" in a *'games recom" on the second floor of the building. After the officer gave Anderson three marked $100 bills and went upstairs, police raided the office. Defence lawyer Paul Greenway said Anderson had started the escort service as a legitimate business endeavour, but when she experienced finan: cial difficulties, she got in with the wrong people. Judge John Evans placed Anderson on three years probation and ordered that she not operate an escort service during that time. She was also ordered to obtain police approval prior to opening any type of business.
