Although there are 87 adult volunteers and 70 teenagers through the high school co-operative educa- tion programs assisting at the pre- sent time, Gerri Flint, secretary in the volunteer services office says the hospital desperately needs more volunteers in patient services such as the library, occupational therapy, the historical clothing store, and the gift shop. In addition, volunteers are re- quired for the comfort cart which takes snacks and magazines to pa- tients, particularily in the psychogeniatric unit. Flint assured that a free baby sit- ting service is provided by the hospital for the benefit of young anothers who might be able to donate their time. She acknowledges that volunteers are an integral part of the program offered at the hospital. "They bring that little extra to the patients," she said. "They (the pa- tients) '! open up more to a volunteer than a staff member.' . Flint added the patients view the volunteers as "something special" because they are taking the time to spend with them. She also stressed that special skills are not required, although people who sing or can do crafts would be particularily appreciated. Volunteers have an extensive in- terview with hospital staff and get a tour of the hospital. Issues such as patient confidentiality are discuss- ed during the interview according to Flint. Anyone interested in volunteering --should call the hospital at 668-5881, Ext. 323. You won't receive any monetary gain, but you could get something more valuable...an appreciative smile from another human being who is glad you are there. Town will promote rabies shots At the last regular meeting of council, Whitby gave the green light to a Region of Durham recommen- dation that the town continue to pro- mote and support the rabies im- munization of domestic animals in the municipality. At its July 2 meeting, regional council passed a motion requesting area municipalities "to carry out educational programs which include encouragement of rabies immuniza- tion of domestic animals."' The mo- tion came as a direct result of a report from Medical Officer of Health Dr. Jean Gray, who sum- merized the impossibility of making rabies shots manditory throughout the region. Instead, she suggested a region-wide campaign to educate the population into the aspects of the dreaded diseases might be more . appropriate. In 1985, the provincial govern- ment passed legislation making rabies immunization compulsory in certain parts of Ontario including Peterborough, Haliburton and East SHARP -- CANON TEXAS INSTRUMENTS CALCULATORS & Adding Machines PORT PERRY STAR 235 Queen Street 985-7383 Do you have 8 WINTER STORAGE PROBLEM? | -- SNOW -- CAR -- TRUCK -- BOAT -- TRACTOR -- HAY -- FIREWOOD -- LUMBER -- MACHINERY Then a . Gray, however was of the opi- nion that at the present time an educational program would be preferable to a legislated require- ment that would be difficult to en- force and regulate. The towns of Pickering, Ajax and Whitby have for some time active- ly promoted and supported the rabies immunization of domestic animals. They have printed pam- phlets and posters encouraging im- munization, which are made available to the public at the Animal Control Pound on Thickson Road North. The dog control by-laws in each of the three municipalities also require proof of rabies immuniza- tion as a condition to obtaining a dog licence. The town promotes im- munization through local newspapers and news letters as well. Whitby also donates the ser- * ; i 2 _ : 7 3 May | help you? vices of its animal control personnel to assist area veterindrians with their annual rabies clinic. In addition, the Pickering, Ajax, Whitby Joint Animal Control Com- mittee is currently examining ways and means of further promoting the immunization of dogs through the sale of dog licences. One of the possi- ble methods being looked into is the adoption of a voucher system, similar to that currently in place in the City of Scarborough. Under such a system -a person buying a dog licence would be given a voucher having a certain dollar value which could be applied against the cost of having the animal immunized by a _ veterinarian. Any future change in the town's current policy would, of course, re- quire council's adoption prior to implementation. | (=~ Q Ay ON 4 ---- Ap ; i] J | No l 4 : 4 *{) fy' : / Would you want either of these two lads to give you a helping hand across the street?
