STE... SE ar dtr rm me 12 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 11, 1986 Counsellor Maureen Salkeld She wants to lose clients Although Maureen Salkeld would like to see her business grow, she would also like to lose all her clients. Maureen is a counsellor, a woman who helps other people deal with their problems, and the proprietor of the recently founded Seagrave Management Services. Her job is to counsel individuals, couples or families who need a help- ing hand, whether the purpose is to save a marriage, ease through a divorce, find a new line of work, or just deal with everyday problems that get people down. "It's a funny business," she says with a smile, 'because the goal is to lose your client." Losing a client means they don't need her anymore, that they solved whatever problem clients had been bothered with, or they have learn- ed new ways to cope with the problems. In 1979 she graduated from Con- cordia University with a Bachelor of Arts, and even more recently, she was granted her Master's Degree in Counselling and Adult Education from the Department of Applied Psychology of the University of Toronto. Part of her degree included prac- tical field work and as a result, she spent a great deal of time working with local family counsellor Charlie Norris in Port Perry. And for the past four years, she has also taught classes at Durham College in stress management and other related subjects. - Counselling has evolved as a part of Maureen's life -- she never ac- tually sat down and decided it was what she wanted to do. "It's happened very naturally," she says. "I guess it's a good way to do things. It feels right." She has been taking clients into her office within her Seagrave-area home for more than a year, and she wouldn't trade her work for - anything. Sure, she admits, the work is depressing sometimes. What else can one expect when work involves hearing other people's problems? But everything becomes worthwhile when clients leave her office feeling better about their lives. For Maureen, those moments make up for everything else. Family counselling isn't the sole aspect of her work, either. Hers is a varied profession and she finds herself talking to people about physical problems, insomnia, chronic aches and pains, grief over death, career counselling, and goal ' setting. Many of her clients come to Maureen from physicians, or from the recommendation of former clients. Although she deals with many of the same problems as Charlie Nor- ris, her practise is slightly different. Because Mr. Norris's service is sponsored by the Region of Durham, he can see anyone regardless of their incomes or how much money they have. As a result, many of his clients come from lower income families. Maureen's service, on the other hand, is generally more expensive but offers the privacy of a home that a public office cannot necessarily Maureen Salkeld is in business providing a counselling ser- vice unique to Scugog Township. Hers is a caring business, com- pletely confidential. For details, see story. : provide. . "© "Some people don't want to be seen sitting in a public office," she says. "I really fulfill a need with the kind of private service that didn't exist in this area before." As with any other counselling ser- vice, everything that goes on within the walls of the office is completely confidential. Maureen doesn't discuss her clients with anyone, in- cluding her family. "It's totally confidential," she says. "Clients can feel secure in knowing nothing: gets out of this room without their permission." When it comes to counselling of "any kind, that's important. It's especially important when she deals with 'relationships "in marital counselling, one of the favourite parts of her work. "I really enjoy working with 'couples. It's very creative," she says. And she gives much credit to those who come to her for help. "They're at a crisis point in their lives. Do they stay together or do they end it? It's a tough decision," she says. Going to a counsellor is the most important step in dealing with pro- blems, she says. "It's an incredibly powerful step, just recognizing something is wrong," she adds.
