At the last meeting of Regional Council, members voted to ask the ministry of transport and cc.n- munications (MTC) to have GO Transit carry out a pilot project in Durham which could be the forerun- ner to making all stations accessi- ble to handicapped people and equipping at least one car per trai . with a minimum of two wheelchair places. , The motion was brought forth by Pickering councillor Bob Mitchell and Jim Witty of Ajax. It read '"That the Region of Durham request the Ministry of Transport and Com- munications to provide GO Transit with a demonstrator project for the physically disabled. The said demonstrator project to include ac- cess to the stations in Durham Region and Union Station, Toronto, for the physically disabled; and fur- ther that at least one car per train should have a minimum of two wheelchair positions in them." Witty, told his peers he was disap- pointed that a provincial agency such as the GO system did not make allowance for the handicapped in their transportation system. He add- ed he hoped the motion as passed by council would speed up GO's con- sideration of handicapped access throughout the whole system. GO, a provincial agency, is presently expanding their route to Whitby, which is scheduled for com- pletion in 1988.
