Warren Geer was nam- ed MVP in the final game and Stacey Ballingall picked up the shut: out in the Port Perry goal. (See story) Pee Wees fall just short by 5-4 On Friday, November 7 the Pee Wee "A" Legion team hosted Bowmanville. After two weeks without a game, Port started out slowly in the first period and allowed the visitors to score twice, but with some excellent saves by goalie Shawn Larocque. The second period proved better for the Legion team when John Col- lins scored, assisted by Jody Logan. Bowmanville replied and then Mark Andrews scored, unassisted for the Legion team to which the visitors added two more. Port Pee Wees scored twice in the third period with goals by Steve Staniland and Stephen Laird. Assists went to Jody Logan, Stephen Laird and Chris Forder. Port put forth great effort to try to tie the game but came out on the losing end of the 5-4 score. The Port Legion team travelled to Cobourg on Sunday, November 9. This was a fast-skating hard- hitting first period with Cobourg off to a fast start with a 3-0 lead. Brian Madill began the goalie duties for Port making some ex- cellent saves. The Legion team finally got on the scoreboard in the second period with Jan Heyes put- ting two in the net. Assists went to Jason Cochrane and Jason Towns. Cobourg scored 3 times to widen the gap. In the third period, the Port Legion team scored twice on goals by Ken Winslow and Brett Puckrin with assists by Jason Cochrane with two and Jan Heyes with a single. Final score was 74 for Cobourg. Next home game is Friday, November 14 when the Legion hosts Cobourg for a return match. Cobourg displayed strong skating, positional play and very hard shooting. Although the score would not in- dicate it, the defence was steady; especially Gavin Cochrane who was a tower of strength. Midway through the second period, the line of Scott Heasman, Steve Desautels and Chad Garvock came closest to breaking the shut- out when they produced some good chances around the Cobourg net. The Malmont Farms boys will have a chance to get back into the - swing of things as they host Bowmanville Friday, November 14 at 8 p.m.; then travel to Ennismore for their first tournament action starting Saturday at 4:30. The Grant Menzies Eagles won the annual Port Perry Midget Tour- nament on the weekend, for the 3rd consecutive year. In the first game of the tourna- ment they beat Oshawa Red Wings 5 to 2. Doing the scoring for the Eagles were Warren Geer with 2, Rob Baker had 2 and Brad Menzies with 1. Picking up assists were An- drew Steele with 2, Steve Connors 2, singles going to Dave Culbert, Derek Dexter, Dave Burnett, Brad Menzies and John Harman. In the second game they bombed Ernestown 10 to 1. Scoring for Port were Mark Barkey assisted by Derek Dexter and Philip McBride. Warren Geer assisted by Brad Men- zies and Brad Traves. Winning this game put the Eagles in the Championship final where they played a tough Gananoque team and playing some of their best hockey of the year, shut them out 40. Scoring for Port were Brad Menzies assisted by Philip McBride. Dave Burnett assisted by Warren - Geer. Warren Geer scored a beau- ty on one of his 'roadrunner' rushes unassisted. Derek Dexter finished the scoring assisted by Jamie Menzies. Juniors lose On November 9, the Sportsland Juniors hosted Ajax, last years league champs. Ajax sprang quick- ly into a 3 goal lead before Port could put a tally on the board. The last period saw the teams trade goals throughout. This made the final score 7-4 for yet another Ajax victory. The Ajax squad seems to have Port's number but we always give them a good game. Keep up the hard work girls and we'll hand them a loss yet. The goal scorers were Jennifer Pelow, Kelly Calloway, Sherry Har- ris and Colleen Yorke with 1 each, while assists went to Cindy Harris, Kim Caudle and Connie Norton with 1 each. Resignation Scugog Arena Board chairman Bob Jamieson has resigned his posi- tion effective at the end of the year. In a recent letter to the Township council, Mr. Jamieson cited increas- ed pressures on his time from new activities as the reason for the resignation. He is a partner in a Port Perry sporting goods store and is serving this year as manager of the Junior C hockey club in Port Perry. The resignation was accepted by council with regret and councillors voted to send Mr. Jamieson a letter of appreciation for the work he has done over the years as a member and chairman of the Arena Board. Stacey Balling: 11 played goal in all 3 games and had an excellent day, allowing only 3 goals in the first 2 games and got the shut-out in the last game with some great saves. This was a well run tournament with Midget Hockey at it's best and Port Perry Minor Hockey and Grant Menzies Eagles would like to thank Doug and Muriel Coates for their sponsorship of this tournament, which without their support it would not be possible. Petites travelled to Iroquois Park in Whitby. Whitby dominated Port Perry in the early going and had Port down 6-2, but a rally at the end of the first period and 4 more goals in the se- cond period led Port victorious over Whitby 86. Scoring for Port Perry was Den- na Lovering 4 goals, 2 assists, Kel- ly Menzies 2 goals, Amy Parliament 1 goal, 2 assists and Lyndsay Dutkewich 1 goal, 2 assists. After receiving some encouraging words from the bench Tracy went back in the second period and «!op- ped Whitby cold! A fine effort in the second period by Kim Poppleton and the other defense kept Whitby off the scoreboard by coming up with the ring and passing well out of Ports end. : The girls worked hard to kill off two penalties in the second period which seemed to nullify Whitby's offense. We would like to try again this week to thank Valerie Payne for coming out and helping us in our other victory against Whitby. These two young runners from Prince Albert School helped their all-Durham teams to first place finish in the Canadian Cross country finals held recently in Toronto. Todd Parry (left) ran 4th in the 8 year old division, while Ed Maunders was 6th in the 10 year old class.
