34 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 11, 1986 } How sweet it is !| Much to a bunch of adults' chagrin, young : Adam Danter came away with first prize in The Great Scugog Monopoly Championship ---- a trophy and a hundred bucks (real cash, not Monopoly money). Above, a triumphant Adam does what he calls his "Richard Nixon impersonation. " Adam Danter (right) grins maliciously while fanning just a few of the $500 bills he had accumulated by the end of The Great Scugog Monopoly Championship, held Saturday, November 8. At ~ left is second place finisher Christopher Espey, who wound up total- ly bankrupt ---- he even had to turn over this $1 bill to greedy Adam! The two teenagers managed to wipe out all the other adults in the game. . Patrick G. Desgan hi 4 DENTURE THERAPY CLINIC 305 Queen Street -- Port Perry BY APPOINTMENT ONLY! Banker Diane Cole (a real teller from the Royal Bank in Port Perry), centre, poses Kroonenberg. with the five finalists after the game Saturday Youngsters cream adults in spirited Monopoly play Angie Kroonenberg and Doug Olliffe swear that Adam Danter cheated in order to win The Great Scugog Monopoly Championship, held at Emiel's Place last Saturday. How else, they reason, could a 13 year kid with braces beat out two grown adults? Alas, Adam won fair and square. Angie and Doug, however, can go on believing what they want -- it's pro- bably the only way their two grown egos can bear the shock of being beaten! And it was a shock. The Great Scugog Monopoly Championship turned out better than organizer Cathy Olliffe had dreamed, with enough cut-throat wheeling and dealing to put the TV show Dallas to shame. Speaking of Dallas, winner Adam Danter showed such acute business acumen, that by the end of the final match, his fellow players had nicknamed him "J.R." The task of winning took every bit of his skill and luck at the famous board game, however. Winning didn't come easy, with four other players vying for the top prize of $100 real cash and a trophy. "Angie Kroonenberg tried her darndest but was the first to col- lapse into bankruptcy after 40 minutes of play. In a desperate attempt to see the only other adult player win, she sold Doug Olliffe her remaining proper- ties (St. Charles Place, States Avenue and Virginia Avenue) for a mere dollar. "Get those kids for me, Doug!" she urged as she tossed him her ti- tle deeds. But it wasn't to be. Despite her bid to help him out, Doug also went down to a crushing defeat 20 minutes later. Drew Cardinal was the next player to go. Although he started out strong with a substantial number of properties, he wound up property rich and money poor -- a deadly combination that threw him into debt. An hour and a half into the game, the competition was pared down to a battle of wits between Christopher Espey and Adam Danter. Young Chris held his own for a long time, secure with his three green properties (Pacific, North Carvlina and Pennsylvania Avenues), loaded with houses, but Adam's superior financial position eventually had its toll. Chris didn't give up easily, however. His mind working like a computer, he worked every angle, giving ground inch by inch, millimetre by millimetre. But when he landed on Adam's Boardwalk with its fancy hotel and a rent of $2,000, Chris was on his way out. Still, he didn't throw in the towel. Chris sold all his houses and then his property, and didn't give up until he was forced to give Adam his last dollar. Adam kept his cool throughout the bout, cracking only once or twice. "Probably run out and buy 20 more Monopoly games,' he quip- ped. "No, not really. Maybe I'll take in some Toronto Maple Leafs games now that I can afford the tickets. I don't know." Some people claim Monopoly is strictly a game of chance, but after The Great Scugog Monopoly Cham- pionship, it's not that easy to say. The winner and finalist Drew Car- dinal, have been Monopoly fanatics for a long time now. Doug Danter says his son Adam, along with Drew and Mark Broadworth (a com- petitor in the preliminary round held at Town Hall 1873 the previous Saturday) played Monopoly nearly every day all summer long. "And when we heard about the tournament,"' Drew said, "we prac- tised even more. Every night." It just goes to show you -- even in a game of chance, practise makes perfect.
