10 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 18, 1986 Former employee is now the boss at Ives Florists It'll be hard to imagine Port Perry without Millie and Vic Ives around town. Since they opened their flower shop, Ives Florists in 1973, the cou- ple nave befriended many local peo- ple, both through their business and through their work with the. Chamber of Commerce. But on October 31, Millie and Vic sold their shop, to Eva Redman, once an employee, and now an owner along with her husband Ron. Fortunately, Eva says, Millie and Vic will still be around, at least un- til after Christmas, to work at the shop part-time while Eva gets her feet wet. Eventually, however, the Ives will retire to their farm nor- thwest of this area, where they will continue to deal in flowers at a less hectic pace. Hectic is not too strong a word to describe business at Ives Florists. It's a busy place, well-known for it's beautiful floral displays, both fresh and silk. New owner Eva is pleased with the establishment reputation of Ives (she will keep the name), but she admits she's a trifle overwhelmed. "I'm scared to death!" she says with a grin. *'1 always knew I'd want something, a shop or a business, of my own. But I thought I'd be star- ting out slower!" Eva started working at Ives almost three years ago. Getting the job was a bit of a fluke. "I walked in the day before Valen- tine's Day to buy something for my mother. African Violets," she recalls. 'They (Millie and Vic) in- vited me up for a coffee and 1 started work the next day!" She had known them for a few years but, at the time, she knew nothing about the flower business. But with Millie and Vic coaching her every step of the way, she slowly ac- quired the knowledge she needed to design and arrange flowers. These days she handles the work like she's been doing it all her life. It seemed a natural step to buy the business, especially with the help of her family. Her husband will do all the accounting and even her 12 year old son will help out, cleaning win- dows and sweeping. For now, she's go; ' J keep Ives Florists basically the same, but sometime down the road she'd like to increase the silk flower business, and add on a room strictly for funeral and wedding consultations. "That won't be for a few years, though,' she says. In the meantime, she wants to establish herself, and reassure her customers they can expect the same quality from Ives Florists with her, as they did from Millie and Vic. "You have to trust a flower shop. You don't want to scare people off," she says. As for the undertaking itself, Eva admits she's a little nervous, but her husband has no such fears. : "My husband thinks it's a piece of cake!" she laughs. With Millie and Vic helping her out at the beginning, it probably will be. 'RE NOT SAVING AT STANDARD TRUST, CES ARE YoU' RE LOSING MONEY. yd RS pr ~ Eva Redman is nervous, but mostly excited about her new title.
