§ Sports PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 18, 1986 -- 27 Three straight wins put team at top of Crowley Division Perfect weekend for the MoJacks by John B. McClelland The Port Perry MoJacks are back in first place in the Walter Crowley Division of the Central Junior C Hockey League, five points up on the Uxbridge Bruins. The MoJacks put together a Scoring chances like this one were a dime a dozen for the Port Perry MoJacks Sunday evening at the Scugog Arena as they blasted the Madoc Hurricanes 17-4. More importantly, the MoJacks also won two other weekend games in perfect weekend with three straight wins to run their season record to ten victories and two losses. The team had little trouble Sun- day night at the Scugog Arena as forward Mark McVety fired five goals to lead the MoJacks to a 174 Little Britain and Uxbridge to jump into first Tournament champions win over the Madoc Hurricanes. Captain Andy Sutch collected seven assists in this romp. But it was a different story Friday night in Uxbridge and Saturday night in Little Britain as the Mo- Jacks had to come from behind in place in the Walter Crowley Division in the Cen- tral Junior C League. The MoJacks have now pushed their winning streak to six games and their record to date is ten wins and two defeats. (See story) Port Atoms do it again Port Perry Malmont Farms Atoms started the weekend action slowly, but finished on a high note; winning the A Championship at the Ennismore Tournament. This championship has become a habit for the guys in green over the last few years. Friday night's league game against Bowmanville was a tight contest, with the visitors taking a 3-1 lead late in the second period and hanging on for the win. Port's goal was scored by Duane Empringham, unassisted; but the result of some fine power-play pressure by Scott Heasman and Sean McEnaney around the Bowmanville net. Saturday in Ennismore, against St. James of Peterborough, Port opened up a 3-0 first-period lead and skated to an 8-2 victory. Sean McEnaney led the way offensively with three goals, including two short-handed efforts on the same penalty early in the second. Duane Empringham had two goals, Adam OFFICE FURNITURE Filing Cabinets Desks - Chairs - etc. PORT PERRY STAR 235 Queen Street 985-7383 Johnston, Dave Pashley and Chad Kearns each scored once and add- ed an assist. Jeff Andrews notched four assists and Gavin Cochrane had a pair to round out the offense. Duane was awarded the MVP medalion for the game. The second game, against Cobourg, was a fairly tight defen- sive struggle against an aggressive checking team. Chad Garvock scored from Duane Empringham late in the first period to get things going, then Duane scored from Peter King and Jeff Andrews late in the second. After Cobourg had made it 2-1, Scott Heasman"s power play goal from Gavin Cochrane and Mike Sluggett, early in the third stood as the winner. Both teams added a late goal, Port's coming off the stick of Sean McEnaney, assisted by Adam Johnston and Peter King. Sean played a strong two-way game and was named MVP of the game. The A Championship was played against an excellent hockey team from Millbrook. This was undoub- tedly the best, most exciting game of Port's season to date. Sean McEnaney started the scoring on a power play goal midway through the first period, assisted by Dave Pashley and Duane Empringham. Slightly over a minute later, Millbrook's McFadden scored his first of three, to tie the score. A period later, Duane gave Port the lead again, assisted by Chad Kearns and Dave Pashley. This lead lasted only eitht seconds, and seven minutes later, McFadden com- pleted the hat-trick to put Millbrook ahead. With under six minutes to play, Steve Desautels hit Chad Garvock with a perfect pass and Chad raced in to tie the game on the breakaway. Jeff Andrews also assisted on the goal. Then, approaching the final minute, Gavin Cochrane, who had been moved up front to successful- ly kill a two man disadvantage, was wide open in front of the net to score the winner off Duane Empr- ingham's pass out from the corner. Jeff Andrews again was the original playmaker. Millbrook pulled their goalie with 15 seconds left but could not penetrate the Malmont Farms defense. Gavin's outstanding two-way play earned him the MVP award for the game. ~ This championship was only possible through strong team play, including excellent goaltending by Mike Pashley and Andrew Pereman. Good penalty killing resulted in only 2 goals against in 12 power plays. Overall, the final game was Port's best team effort of the year and signals a promising future for the team. both games for a 7-5 win over the Bruins and a thrilling 5-4 victory over the Merchants, In each of those games, the Mo- Jacks waited until the third period before coming alive to pull out the victory. Against the over-matched Hur- ricanes, the MoJacks scored in the first minute of play and ran up a 7-0 lead by the end of 20 minutes. Madoc showed a little life in the second with two goals, but the Mo- Jacks added four of their own to lead 11-2 after the middle frame.- And they put six more pucks behind the visiting netminders Al Wright "and Jeff Gordon in the final period. In all, the MoJacks directed 54 shots at the Madoc net. Paul Goreski fac- ed 20 for the MoJacks. Mark McVety led the scoring with "five goals, while several players clicked for two each including Bob St. Jules, Darren Nesbitt and Mike Watters who saw plenty of ice time in this one. Singles came from the sticks of Clark Menzies, Chris Nicholson, Brian Prakken, Sean Bradley, John Miller, and Rob Phinney. For the visiting Hurricanes, Jim Ervine had two, with singles going to Steve Boyce and Troy Wood. As the score indicates, the out- come of this one was never in doubt as the MoJacks were relentless in their attack and owned the margin of play throughout the game. Defenseman Clay Dempsey and forward John Hartford watched from the sideline. Dempsey is nur- sing a sore ankle after blocking a shot the previous night and Hart- ford, a strong penalty killer, will be out at least a week with a separated shoulder. In Little Britain Saturday night, 'the MoJacks found themselves star- ting at a 4-1 deficit going into the third period. But they rallied for four un-answered markers to eke out a 5-4 win. Darren Nesbitt clicked in the - opening seconds of the final frame and Rick Wilson made it 4-2 just over a minute later. Captain Andy Sutch narrowed the margin to 4-3 on a power play and sharp-shooter Mark McVety scored the game win- ner at 14:06 with assist to Chris Nicholson. McVety got the MoJacks first goal in the opening period. Brian Tarleton was in the nets for Port Perry and faced 30 shots in this one. Scoring for the Merchants were Terry Kea, Paul Young, Don Quackenbush and John O'Loughlin. The victory over the Merchants was virtually a carbon copy of the way the MoJacks took two points from the Uxbridge Bruins on Friday evening in Uxbridge. The Bruins rolled up a 3-0 lead in the first seven minutes of the game and they looked like they were on their way to a victory. But the MoJacks were far from dead as Craig Menzies clicked on a power play and then Andy Sutch and Darren Nesbitt scored to cut the margin to 4-3 after 20 minutes. Bruins scored the only goal of the middle frame to take a 5-3 lead. The final frame was just a little more than two minutes old when Bob St. Jules cut the margin to 5-4 and four minutes later Rob Phinney pulled the teams into a 5-5 tie. The momentum at this point was clearly in the MoJacks favour and Uxbridge native John Miller scored the game winner near the mid-point in the period with assists to Menzies and Nesbitt. Captain Andy Sutch with an assist from McVety fired the final goal of the contest to give the MoJacks a little breathing space with a two goal bulge. These two come-from-behind vic- tories illustrate the fact that the team is playing with a lot. of con- fidence and discipline. here was no panic, the players stuck to their game plan and their positions and simply fought back to earn the wins. The MoJacks now have a five point bulge on second place Ux- bridge, but the Bruins have a cou- ple of games in hand. The only two losses the Bruins have suffered so far have come at the hands of the MoJacks. : In other action around the league over the weekend, Bowmanville tripped Lindsay 6-4, Lakefield demolished Brighton 18-0, Lindsay 'and Little Britain played to a 6-6 tie and Port Hope trimmed Madoc 10-4. Earlier in the week, Madoc skated the strong Ajax Axemen to a 7-7 draw. The MoJacks are idle until this Friday evening when they head north for an inter-divisional match against the tough Lindsay Muskies, and then Sunday night are home at the Scugog Arena for what should be a very interesting game against the Wellington Dukes. The last time these teams met in Wellington, the Dukes pinned an 8-2 loss on the MoJacks, something that coaches George Burnett, Ed Olsen and the rest of the team would like to avenge. Game time is 7:30 p.m. The MoJacks are un-defeated in their last six outings and would like to keep that streak alive this com- ing weekend. Petites tie 5-5 On Saturday, November 15 Bruton's 1.D.A. Petites travelled to Meadowvale Four Rinks Arena in Mississauga. The goal post played havoc on the Port shooters and hard luck around the opposing net earned Port Perry a point in a 5-5 tie against Mississauga. Scoring for Port was Denna Lovering 2 goals, Lyndsay Dutkewich 1 goal, 1 assist, Amy Parliament 1 goal, Kelly Menzies 1 goal and Shannon Fox 1 assist. Keep working Chrissy! The girls had to play hard and rose to the occasion when they found themselves playing one and two players short. All the girls deserve credits for a fine game, but the penalties against Port Perry were a big factor in a Mississauga rally. Fine defensive play by Tanya, Kim, Jennifer and Michelle and good stops by Tracy kept Mississauga off the scoreboard in the dying seconds. Our next game is Saturday, November 22 at 5:30 p.m. in Port Perry against Markham. It should be Peachy Awesome!
