Get the point What a face! The look on this dog's face says it all at a rabies clinic held at Scugog Animal Clinic Saturday afternoon. Above, Dr. Jim Brown gives *'Saber" a shot. Saber, owned by Martin and June Stubbs of Blackstock, was just one of more than 100 animals in- jected at the clinic. For more photos, see inside. SANTA CLAUS PARADE ONE DAY ONLY -- Saturday, November 29th -- We Pay Sales Tax MERSCO 5¢ - $1.00 239 Queen Street, Port Perry ll There could be some major changes in the way mail is delivered to rural households in Canada. The Canadian Press wire service reported in a story published Mon- day that Canada Post has come up with a "business plan" which, if im- plemented, will have a dramatic im- pact on rural mail service. There are now about 5200 rural post offices in Canada and just over 5000 rural mail routes. According to the published story from Canadian Press, the Post Of- fice is considering the following changes. *Some 3500 of the larger rural post offices would be turned over to private contractors with existing staff either let go or kept on at reduced salaries. Many of the re- maining 1700 rural post offices would be closed. Where two offices exist within five miles of each other, the policy would be to close one and replace it with group mail boxes. *Local merchants, where PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 25, 1986 -- 3 New plan would have dramatic impact on rural mail delivery available, would take over stamp sales in communities losing their post offices. *Customers with mail boxes at the end of their laneways would lose the service they now-receive if they live within four KM of a main country road. Mail would be delivered to . group boxes at main country road intersections. *Small rural contractors would be eliminated in favour of larger ones hired to deliver mail to the new main route groups of mail boxes. Customers living on main rural routes would retain end-of-laneway services. These proposed changes in the way mail is delivered in rural areas and the level of service customers now get are not sitting very well with Opposition Members of Parliament. "It's a devestation of rural delivery, absolutely mind- boggling,"' was the way Liberal Postal critic George Baker describ- ed the changes. Canada Post has also indicated that the cost of mailing a first class letter in this country will climb from the current 34 cents to 40 cents over the next five years. Number (From page 1) wide system, emergency calls from anywhere in Durham would go into a central bureau at the Regional Police HQ in Oshawa and local emergency units would be dispatch- ed from there. Just how much such a system would cost will have to wait until Bell Canada brings in its report in January. But during last week's council meeting, Durham Chief Ad- ministrative Officer Don Evans warned that the 911 enhanced dial- ing package is "going to be enor- mously expensive." SUNBIRD 4 DR.
