Information Scugog, a non-profit charitable organization, is a free.in- formation and referral service fund- ed through Community Care. Telephone numbers of over 1,000 organizations and agencies, from Port Perry to Toronto, are filed so volunteers can refer callers direct- ly to the organization that can specifically assist them. Newcomers to town who don't know anyone in the area can call In- formation Scugog to be referred to such organizations as church groups. Information Scugog also supplies citizens with pamphlets concerning legal assistance, support groups, tourism, and many other topics. "It all depends on people's needs," says Elizabeth Fulford, Ad- ministrative Co-ordinator at Com- munity Care. However, there is a limit on what Information Scugog will do. "We don't get involved as a third party." ' Information Scugog has resource books from the Ontario Government which contains addresses and phone numbers and people can use it to ob- tain things like birth certificates. The organization also has applica- tions for Rent Geared to Income Housing which helps families who need financial assistance find affor- dable housing. They also assist in filling out government forms. Mrs. Fulford once received a call from an art€' professor at Ball State University, in Muncie, Indiana, who 'wanted to know all about Bill Lishman"s "Autohenge" sculpture after it received media attention. She referred the professor to Mr. Lishman himself. "The whole philosophy of Com- munity Care is to assist people with the least amount of intrusion in their Ge Hearin Aid (entre ¢f Port Perry Dr. E. Mueller's Office - 24 Water St. S., Plaza, Port Perry, Ontario LOB 1NO lives,' Mrs. Fulford explains. "We try to promote people to do things for themselves." She also says they are always looking for people to help in the of- fice. Those interested in becoming a volunteer must have an interest in people and a good telephone man- ner. Volunteers get nine hours of training and they are asked to work once a week on a regular basis. Volunteer positions are not ex- clusively for women either. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer or who needs to be refer- red to a specific organization can call Community Care at 985-8461 or drop in to the office at 208 North Street weekdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. or from 1 p.m. to4 p.m. All in- formation is confidential.
