The annual Christmas Concert at the Community Centre will be held on Friday, December 12 at 6:30 p.m. A variety program is being prepared and Santa will come. Everyone is invited to come and join in this community get-together. Christmas, as we all know is a time of giving and sharing. There has been a food bank set up in Ashburn Store which gives us an op- portunity to share with those less fortunate. Don't forget to save your used stamps, bring then to the church and they will go through the Womens Missionary Society and be usd in a worthwhile project. The Brooklin Horticultural Socie- ty held its annual business meeting and election of officers for 1987 on Wednesday, November 26 at the Brooklin United Church. The tables were beautifully decorated in a Christmas theme, and at 7:00 p.m. fifty-five guests sat down to dessert and coffee. Lori Gemmell of Whitby with ex- citing harp music. Awards for highest point winners in flower and vegetable shows went to Audrey Young, 1st. Mary Housego 2nd and Dorothy Barter 3rd. The award for excellence in vegetable gardening in memory of the late Fred Daw, a former board member was won by Audrey Young. Moyra Griffin was the novice winner and Penny Hoskin received the membership plaque. The new executive for 1987 are past-president Ken Brown, presi- dent Betty Van Buuren, 1st vice- president Veronica Colangelo, 2nd vice Joan Brack, Secretary Ken Brown, Treasurer Margaret Davis, Auditors Allan Downey and Audrey Young. No contract for teachers is expected this year Durham Board of Education secondary school teachers more than likely will not get a contract settlement in time for Christmas ac- cording to the chief negotiator for the teachers' bargaining committee. - Al Monks said there are no bad feelings between the teachers and the board and that negotiations are going particularily well, but that there is still a great deal of work to do. He added he is sure there will be a contract settlement in the long term. Bargaining meetings are ten- tatively scheduled for December 10 and 11. "We should be closer to a settle- ment after those meetings," said Monk. "We're definitely not moving apart." The 1,000 members of District 17 of the Mntarin Secandarv Schanl Teachers' Federation have been without a contract since August 31. Monk stated neither the teachers or the board are happy with Provin- 'cial Bill 100 governing teacher con- tract talks which allows teachers to work late into the fall without a contract. Both sides are not permitted to talk about particulars of the negotia- tions; however, Monk did say he disagreed with comments made last week by Whitby trustee, and board vice-chairman lan Brown. Brown said the main issue in the dispute between teachers and the board was one of money. "Workload is one of them and we also want to discuss certain ad- ministrative and management situations and procedures," said Monk adding, "I believe we can work these things out."
