Just after midnight on March 29, 1985 while answering a call to a house fire in Whitby, he and fellow firefighter Donald Ferguson braved intense heat and thick smoke as they entered the burning house to look for occupants. As he left the bedroom with the child, he met Mur- dock and the three of them were making their way to an exit. As they crossed through the kit- chen a sudden ball of flames knock- ed Ferguson and the girl to the floor. Murdock picked her up and carried her to safety while his companion made his own way out of the burn- 'ing house. Both men suffered burns and the heat was so intense their helmets were burned as well. While Murdock tended to the young girl outside, Ferguson re- entered the burning house and found a younger child in a crib and carried her outside. The ten year old girl survived the ordeal, but the younger child died later in hospital. In an interview with the Star last week, Murdock said he didn't have time to think about personal danger to himself when he entered the bur- ning house. "It's just something you do. We are trained to do this. It's a reaction to a situation," he said. Firefighter Don Ferguson, who lives in Whitby, will also be award- ed the Medal of Bravery this Friday in Ottawa. This is not the first citation for bravery that firefighter Murdock has received. On January 1, 1984 he rescued an 18 year youth from a bur- ning house and received a citation from the Town of Whitby for that act of bravery. He has been a member of Whitby Fire Department for eight years. COUNTRY STORE 207 QUEEN STREET - PORT PERRY - 985-3011 WE PAY THE SALES TAX!
