Black and white certainly does this scene no justice, but never- theless, Chester and Adele Pedzikowski's front yard is a joy to behold. Hundreds of different coloured lights sparkle against a Since 1961, Chester and Adele Pedzikowski have been making Caesarea a brighter place to live. Every Christmas since the friend- ly couple moved to Lakeview Street 25 years ago, Chester and Adele have transformed their brick bungalow and front yard into a vir- tual Christmas paradise. A multitude of coloured bulbs, too many to count, sparkle on every tree, while floodlights illuminate a jolly wooden Santa Claus. The overall effect is a breathtaking sight and the subject of much admiration from the surrounding community. Chester, a volunteer firefighter 'and the owner of an appliance repair business, does all the actual work putting up the lights, but he does it all for his wife Adele who gives him ideas and inspiration. "Actually," he says in a thick Polish accent, 'I do it for my wife. She is a real Christmas lover, ever since she was a little girl. She says, 'When Christmas comes, I want a real Christmas.' She is my inspiration." Their Christmas yard decorating started shortly after they were mar- ried, in Toronto's west end, but it wasn't until they moved to Caesarea that the couple began decorating in earnest. "Hydro cost too much in Toron- to," Chester explains. "Here, I am free to do whatever I want." Over the years the Pedzikowski's have expanded their decorating, ad- ding or changing something with each passing Christmas. The wooden Santa Claus, however, is a standing fixture, purchased from a Port Perry lumberyard 20 years - ago. "Charlie Reesor used to sell them," Chester recalls, "for fifteen dollars. You couldn't get one like that now for that price." And what a bargain the jolly old elf turned out to be. It has attracted many childen over the years, in- cluding, Adele says, one little tyke who ran up to his wooden ear and whispered what he wanted for Christmas. Although Santa Claus is popular, it's the lights that attract literally busloads of people to the Ped- zikowski house. One night a few years ago, Chester looked out his window in time to see two busloads of school children eyeing his front yard. He says people have come from as far away as Uxbridge, some in organized groups from schools, churches and even the Salvation Army. The lights are a lot of work but Chester thinks it's worth it. Although Chester and Adele have many fir trees already in their front yard, Chester hauls in several more cut trees especially for the Christmas season, and plants them in the ground where they stay until the frost leaves in April or May. In the past he has used trees up to 40 feet high but after watching many of them topple in severe winds, lights and all, he has resigned himself to shorter trees. Still, even the not-so-tall trees are beautiful when lit up. Adele says, "It gets to be a hob- by. There's so many kids, so many people of all ages who enjoy it."
