Get ready to hit the hay Ashburn and Area News by Florence Ashton The Ladies Bible Class and the Eleanor Knight Group of the Women's Missionary Society joined together for the annual Christmas supper meeting on Monday evening, December 8th. It was nice to have several of our men folk join with us. The Church Hall and the tables were tastefully decorated for the season. About 25 of us:sat down to a delicious meal which was pot-luck style. Cake and ice-cream was serv- ed for dessert. In the absence of our president Nellie Hopkins, Lois Daw, vice- president of the Women's Mis- ~ sionary Society chaired the meeting 3 } i and conducted a short worship ser- vice. Margaret Davis was in charge of the programme, which was prepared by Nellie. The programme was based on the theme "What is Christmas?"' Christmas is a time for remembering, Christmas is a time for a quiet meditation, Christmas is a time for snow, Christmas is a time for laughter and Christmas is a message. Margaret shared with us BROOKLIN LIBRARY some lovely readings based on these ts With Rita Davidchuk at the piano we all enjoyed singing many of the lovely Christmas songs and carols. We concluded the evening with sing- ing '"'We Wish you a Merry Christmas." Rev. McEntyre closed with prayer. We were reminded that the Ladies Bible Class are packing boxes for the shut-ins at the home of Rose Heron on Friday, December 19th. There were nine tables at the euchre game last Thursday even- ing. The first prize to the ladies went to Joy Bright and the second to Ver- na Draper. The first mens prize to Art Richardson and the second to Verna Slute. Lone hands to Jack Skelding. Door prize to Ruby Smith. The 50-50 draw to Roy Brown. The next euchre game will be on January 8, 1987. The Christmas concert at the Community Centre was a huge suc- cess last Friday night with a good attendance. A variety programme with fun and laughter, and a visit from good old Santa. Don't forget the hayride on Wednesday, December 17th. You are asked to meet at Ashburn Store at 6:30. Bundle up warm and bring your children and enjoy a hayride around the community while sing- ing your favorite carols. Hot chocolate and cookies after at the Community Centre. Rev. McEntyre's sermon title last Sunday was "How Christ Comes: Unexpectedly." He chose as his text St. Luke 17, verse 21. Muriel Fisher, Art Matthews and Aaron Matthews assisted the minister in the lighting of the Advent Wreath. Doug and Ron Ashton read the scripture lessons, The choir sang the Advent Hymn, Beautiful poinsettias and candles decorated the sanctuary for Christmas. Truly a beautiful setting. Keep in mind the Christmas Eve Candle-lighting service at 8:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to join with us at Burns for this most impressive service.
