oh sagt I AS a PR " we 30 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 23, 1986 Sports Netminder Brian Tarleton sparkles in two weekend games by John B. McClelland . The Port Perry MoJacks got a couple of pre-Christmas gifts over the weekend, and it was their net- minder Brian Tarleton who played Brian Tarleton Santa Claus. Tarleton was nothing short of brilliant as MoJacks tied the Ux- bridge Bruins 3-3 on Friday night, and defeated them 3-1 in a return match at the Scugog Arena Sunday night. He faced 70 shots in the two games, and were it not for his ef- forts, the MoJacks might have come out of the weekend pointless. Tarleton, of course, played for the Bruins last season, and it's obvious that he enjoys beating his former mates. The MoJacks and Bruins have met four times this season so far with the MoJacks taking three wins and a tie, and Tarleton has been a big factor in all four games between these inter-divisional rivals. The three points on the weekend give the MoJacks 33 for the season (16 wins, and tie and four defeats) and keeps them barely on top of the - Central Junior C overall standings, three up on the Ajax Axemen. While Tarleton was performing admirably in the cage over the weekend, forward Craig Menzies was hot around the Bruin net as he rapped in three goals and picked up an assist as well. In both games, Menzies played a hard- hitting, ag- gressive style. In Uxbridge on Friday night, the MoJacks jumped into a 2-0 lead in the first period as Chris Nicholson scored at the seven minute mark with an assist from hard-working captain Andy Sutch. Three minutes later, Menzies went to work on the power play with help from Sean Bradley and Jim Lewis. The MoJacks totally dominated the opening period as they outshot the Bruins 15-6. But it was a dif- ferent story in the middle frame as the Bruins came to life and carried the play to the MoJacks. By the mid-point, they had tied the game at 2-2 on goals by Kevin Smith and Stu Holter. Smith's goal was something of a gift from the man in the striped jersey as Tarleton ap- to have the puck smothered. The goal judge did not put the red light on and Tarleton argyed strenuously, to no avail. The Bruins Craig Menzies out-shot Port Perry 18-10 in the mid- dle period and many of those shots came during a long stretch when the MoJacks were two men short. Tarleton was brilliant in keeping the Bruins off the board during those - penalties. Menzies got the second of the night on a power play early in the third with Bob St. Jules and Jim Lewis drawing the assists. But the Bruins tied it a few minutes later on "a power play of their own with Ken Burrows doing the damage. The Bruins fired 16 shots against Tarleton in the final period, while MoJacks could manage just eight at the other end of the ice. Actually, the MoJacks had a great chance to win the game in the dying seconds as there was a wild scram- ble in front of the Bruin cage, but the puck just refused to go in the net. On Sunday night in front of a large crowd at the Scugog Arena, the Mo- Jacks again jumped into a 2-0 lead in thé first period. At 10:58, Menzies scooped up a loose puck at the side of the Bruin net and tucked it home with a back-hand. Rick Wilson and Dave Burnett earned the assists. Less than two minutes later, the . hard-working line of Greg Warriner, Brian Prakken and John Hartford gave the MoJacks a 2-0 lead. Some sulid forechecking gave Hartford the puck in the slot and he rifled a shot waist-high that beat Joe Risk cleanly. Late in the period, Stu Holter scored for the visitors off a scram- ble with Tarleton down and out of the play. This was a good period of hockey with the shots even at 13 each and both teams took turns applying the pressure. The tempo of the game slowed in the middle period as the teams ap- peared to play more cautiously. At 11:20 MoJacks were on the power play when Menzies fed a neat "'give and go" pass to defenseman Darren Nesbitt who made no mistake with a back-hand from 15 feet out. That was the insurance marker. Penalties hurt both teams in the third period but the score remained 3-1. The Bruins carried the play in the final few minutes trying to get a couple of goals to tie the score, but Tarleton thwarted their efforts time after time. He made one point-blank stop to rob the Bruins of a sure goal, sliding across the crease to smother the shot in the pads. The game turned chippy in the fina) 8 pated with joveral minor skir- goal-tending, the team has given up just 12 goals in the last six outings. But the team is having a little trou- ble scoring goals as the puck is not going in the opposition net with the same frequency it did at the begin- ning of the season. The MoJacks have some tough hockey ahead of them starting with a game this Tuesday night (Dec. 23) against the Lakefield Chiefs. And this coming Sunday night (Dec. 28) MoJacks fans will get a chance to see the Ajax Axemen for the first time this season as they pay a visit MolJacks take three points from the Bruins next Tuesday night, the MoJacks pay a visit to the Bowmanville Eagles for the first meeting of the season between these two teams.
