OCTOBER 1986 Kelly Goreski is back home again after winning a bronze medal in the toughest dirt bike race in the world, the Interna- tional Six-Day Enduro held in Burgamo, Italy. More than 400 dirt bike racers from around the world competed. An Ontario Supreme Court Judge has quashed two Scugog Township by-laws relating to a proposed development of 22 single family homes at Stephen- son's Point on Scugog Island. Two former residents of Port Perry died last week in what Durham Police describe as a 'murder-suicide' at the office of Mara Limestone on Conces- sion two, southwest of Port Perry. A group of twenty-four Japanese educators spent two weeks in North America to tour schools. They spent a few days in Durham Region, including Port Perry High School and R.H. Cornish Public School. The Blackstock, Nestleton, Caesarea area is the latest area to be hit by a rabies scare. Dr. John Churchill says there have been seven confirmed cases of rabies found in the area recently. Anyone drinking water from a spring at Portview Beach on Scugog Island may be "'taking a gamble' according to the Durham Health Unit. Tests on the water show the fecal counts are much too high and are a cause for concern. A new fire truck has been delivered to the Caesarea Fire Hall. The modern, up-to-date fire truck was purchased by the township at a cost of $112,000. The owners of two local homes were honoured when the Oshawa and District Real Estate Board chose them as 136 Water St., Port Perry - 985-9009 winners in their annual Pride of Ownership contest. Daniel and Angela McPhee: and Peter and Nancy Hvidsten received awards for their homes. A Task Force looking into the problem incurred in Lake Scugog over the past few years has released a report containing 16 recommendations which they hope will alleviate, if not eliminate concern for the growth of weeds in the lake. After 12 years of service to the Canadian Cancer Society, Ralph Wilbur has retired. He was honoured for his dedicated service by the local Cancer Society at a surprise dinner at Emiel's Place last Wednesday evening. Two Scugog Township men have been acquitted in the tragic death of a 10 year old boy who died from injuries when a tractor rolled over at a farm near Uxbridge last year. Blane Paton and Shawn Pearsell were found not guilty of criminal ence. More than 500 people attend- ed the offical opening of the new Cathelic School in Port Perry on Sunday afternoon. NOVEMBER 1986 Halloween was generally quiet around Scugog Township, but pranksters did manage to slash tires of three cars parked in driveways in Port Perry, and also the tires of a cruiser and the paddy-wagon in front of the Police office on Water Street.. Scugog Council is ready to negotiate a cash buy-out'of the lease on the Port Perry Fairgrounds, and the council wants to discuss the new pro- posal with the Fair Board at a special meeting this Saturday morning. Thieves continue to be busy in the Township, last week making off with close to $15,000 worth of stolen property. After 28 years in business, Eleanor Wood retired from her flowers business last week. She says she has no real plans for her retirement other than to relax, tend to her garden and visit her children, grand- children and great- grandchildren. A massive commercial- residential development, with plans for a 50,000 square foot enclosed shopping mall have been proposed to council. The development being proposed by Hans Moehring, a Toronto businessman is planned for a piece of property on the north side of 7A highway where Bayshore Take-out and Conway Place now stand. The Scugog Choral Society is packing the house at Town Hall 1873 with its latest production of 'My Fair Lady." It's the 10th an- niversary of this popular group. Port Perry High School held their annual Commencement Exercises in the school's auditorium last week. Valedic- torian for the event was Laura Trembly. Scugog Township council is prepared to offer the Port Perry Fair Board $300,000 in financial assistance to move the Fair to a new site near the Scugog Arena, plus pick up the cost of preparing the new site for the 1986--The year's best and worst annual Fair. Gerri MacDonald, a recent graduate of Port Perry High School, has been presented with the Young Woman of Distinc- tion Award for Durham Region. Scugog Township is consider- ing a numbering system for homes and properties in rural areas for as early as next Spring. The system is designed to prevent confusion in giving directions to police, fire and am- bulances responding to emergencies in rural areas. 'More than 100 animals were vacinated at a rabies clinic held at the Scugog Animal Hospital Saturday afternoon. The Royal Bank celebrated 25 years of service to Port Perry and area last Friday.
