McClelland The Port Perry MoJacks have lengthened their overall lead in the Central Junior C League standings, thanks to a pair of tough wins last week over two of the better clubs in the loop. On Sunday night, the MoJacks doubled the visiting Ajax Axemen 4-2 in front of a large crowd at the Scugog Arena. And back on December 23, the MoJacks nipped the Lakefield Chiefs 6-4 in Lakefield in a game that was still in doubt in the final seconds when defenseman Rick Wilson scored into a vacant Chief net. The four points give the MoJacks 37 so far this season (18 wins, four losses, one tie) and puts them five up on second place Ajax which still has a game in hand on Port Perry. A crowd of better than 500 at the Scugog Arena Sunday night was treated to a fine Junior C hockey game: fast, hard hitting but with just five minor penalties as both teams stuck strictly to hockey. The Axemen got on the board first and quickly after 52 seconds of play when Mark Hamilton converted a goal-mouth pass to beat MoJack net minder Brian Tarleton cleanly. But at the 4:30 mark, Craig Men- zies knotted the score at 1-1 on a power play effort. Rob St. Jules did most of the work as he made some nifty moves inside the Ajax line before sliding a pass to Menzies. Rick Wilson drew the other assist. Port Perry had much of the play in this period out-shooting the visitors 15-6, but couldn't get the puck past Bryan Hanke who made numerous tough stops. : The second period started out much like the first with the MoJacks having several good chances. Chris Nicholson found himself all alone with the puck in the slot, but fired a hard shot right into Hanke' s pads. At the 10:12 mark, Rick Wilson put the MoJacks ahead with an un- assisted effort. He grabbed a clear- ing pass just inside the blue line and fired a hard screened shot that went through Hanke's legs. The Axemen tied it again at 16:24 when Brian Harnum slapped at a loose puck from a sharp angle and found the corner behind Tarleton. The teams opened up in the third period and the result was several good chances at both ends of the ice. The winner came on the power play with Ajax's Greg Van Sickle off for high sticking. Captain Andy Sutch and Mark McVety controlled the puck deep in the Ajax zone and patiently worked a pass to St. Jules who was parked beside the goal post. He made no mistake rapping it home. And just for good measure less than a minute later, Greg Warriner added an insurance marker. He found himself with a loose puck just over the Ajax blue line and fired a wrist shot that hand-cuffed the big Ajax netminder who got a glove on the shot and then watched it roll in- to the net. The MoJacks were full marks for the win. They worked hard at both ends of the ice. Strong back- checking kept the Ajax forwards off balance. Rob Phinney turned in a good game as did St. Jules with a goal and an assist. Port Perry was without stand-out defenseman Darrin Nesbitt, but along the blue line Mike Watters, Clay Dempsey, Brian Stevenson and Jim Lewis played solid hockey. And Rick Wilson showed why he was selected as one of the reps from the MoJacks for the annual all-star Boxing Day in Lakefield. He's an outstanding skater and puck handler. Dave Simms, who recently joined the MoJacks also had a good game along the blue line. He's a steady, tough performer.' The hardest body check of the game was dished out by John Hart- ford late in the third period when he levelled an Ajax player just inside his own blue line. 6-4 Win In Lakefield two days before Christmas, the MoJacks jumped in- to an early 3-0 lead, then held on the 'rest of the way to defeat the Chiefs 6-4. But it took an empty net goal with 39 seconds left by defenseman Rick Wilson to settle the issue and give MoJacks two important points in tt 2 league standings. Captain Andy Sutch won a face-off inside the MoJacks blue line draw- ing the puck back to Wilson who lofted it the length of the ice and in- to the heart of the vacated Lakefield net. The Chiefs had been pressing hard in a bid to get the tying goal. In the first period, the game was just 3:32 old when Chris Nicholson clicked on a power play with Sutch and Wilson picking up the assists. A little more than a minute later, the MoJack power. play went to work again and this time it was Wilson who found the range with a hard slap shot to the stick side. Dar- ' ren Nesbitt and Craig Menzies drew eht assists. The MoJacks third straight power play goal came at 7:02 as Sutch slip- ped in a rebound with Nesbitt and Menzies again picking up the assists on the play. At 19:34, the Chiefs got on the board as Sullivan McMahon beat Brian Tarleton with a rising shot from about 25 feet in front. The Mo- Jacks didn't totally dominate the first period, out-shooting the Chiefs 11-10, but they made the most of the chances they had. Early in the middle frame, Sutch scored his second of the night on a great wrist shot. He took passes from Nesbitt and Wilson, stepped across the Chief line and complete- ly fooled John Cole with a rising shot partially screened by a Lakefield defender. The Chiefs narrowed the margin n the win column to 4-2 at 4:52 on the power play when Brad McFadden beat Tarleton with a hard slap shot from the deep slot area. Chris Nicholson, with his second of the night, gave the MoJacks a three goal bulge once again at 18:12. Sutch po Nesbitt drew the assists as Nicholson had a couple slaps at a loose puck at the side of the Chief net. MoJacks out-shot the Chiefs 13-11 in this period afid Tarleton had to be sharp on several occasions. In the third period, the Chiefs made a game of it with two early goals. The first came at 3:15 on the power play as Terry Maxwell found the range, and then at 4:57, MoJack goalie Brian Tarleton missed a puck off the back-boards and Jamie Reynolds poked it into the corner of the cage. The Chiefs applied pressure for most of the remainder of the game, but the MoJacks held on until Wilson salted it away with his open net marker in the final minute. It was a good night for captain An- dy Sutch who picked up five points. Rick Wilson had four points as did Darren Nesbitt who patrolled the blue line with a lot of authority in. this game. " Ironically, the MoJacks nearly ° didn't make it to the game as their bus developed transmission pro- blems en route. Another bus had to be dispatched to get the team to the Lakefield Arena and the game was: about 30 minutes late in starting. SLAP SHOTS: The MoJacks hit the road Tues- day night (December 30) for a game in Bowmanville against the Eagles, and this coming Sunday (Jan. 4) they will host the Little Britain Mer- chants at the Scugog Arena with face off at 7:30 p.m. Rick Wilson and Andy Sutch were "the MoJacks reps on the all star team which defeated Lakefield Chiefs 6-5 on Boxing Day. Sutch is having a fine year as captain of the MoJacks and he was selected as one of the outstanding players in the all- star match. Last Sunday's 50-50 draw was worth $196, an indication of the good crowd on hand for the game. There were just five minor penalties in the Ajax game. The MoJacks are play- ing excellent hockey defensively. The team has given up 18 goals in the last eight games, a streak that includes six wins, one tie and one . defeat. Novice House League scores Remax Realty - 7 Van Camp Contracting - 4 Adam Hunter led the Remax crew in this one, scoring 4 goals. Jon Jamieson got a pair and an assist, Mike Balmforth a single goal and an assist. Jason Robinson helped out twice, with single assists being pick- ed up by Steve Cochrane, Ryan Diceman, Troy Anderson and Jamie Trick. Scott Prechitko replied 3 times for Van Camp and Kristian Wooten had the other. Brad Morton assisted on two of Scott's goals, with Jeff Grif- fin, David Kemp, and Justin Wooten getting one assist each. Kinsmen - 16 David's Hairstyling - 2 The Kinsmen team roped and hog- tied David's in rodeo fashion in this lop-sided game, probably due in large part to the fine bulldogging of their interim coach Melody Moase. Jeff Clarke and Darryl Moase each fired 5 goals, with Darryl also assisting twice and Jeff once. Ian Shrigley notched the hat-trick and assisted on 5 other goals. Shawn Lewerentz had 2 goals and 3 assists, Mike Leeming a goal and three assists. Steve Elliott and Craig Sheedy had 2 assists each, Matt McClelland one. Quite a game for the Kinsmen! For David's, Matt Brown scored both markers. Swamp Autobody - 3 Port Perry Printing - 1 Both teams were short players for this match-up. Kirk Swain opened the scoring for Port Perry Printing, but Swamp replied with three unanswered goals to win 3-1. Darryl McEnaney had two of them, Gerry Blackburn scoring the other.
