AM Gi du Lh A ST on i dh ta dou » Ea ail Judging by the throngs of people who crowded Queen Street during the final days before December 25th, the Christmas of 1986 was a pretty fair financial success for downtown merchants. A random survey of local stores, completed by the Sfar on New Year's Eve e, revealed overall satisfaction with the holiday shop- ping blitz. For the most. part, sales were as good or better than last year's record-breaking figures, with most- ly practical items being purchased over the counter by consumers with wallets full .of cash rather than plastic. Bill Brock of Brock's Department Store saw "quite a successful * month' with sustained business all 'month long rather than a last- minute 'panic in the last shopping days before Christmas. "Except for a few stormy days when the weather made shopping difficult, we were kept pretty busy all month long," he said. " The opposite was true at Country Classics, a women's clothing store on Queen Street, where the month was relatively quiet until the week before Christmas when gift-buying men pulled out all the stops. According to clerk Marilyn Wood, husbands looking for a present for their wives. Many men, Mrs. Wood pointed out, came in waving credit cards telling her to pick something out, anything, and wrap it up. Others were more choosy, selecting special outfits, but they-toe relied on credit cards. Regardless of how they shipped, Mrs. Wood said it was a pleasure to «serve men in a shop usually populated by women. "It's been really super because you don' t deal with men the rest of the year," she said. Local drug stores had similar stories. It's reserve Christmas Eve, usually the last few hours of Christmas Eve, for running out to the drug stores and swooping up a last minute bottle of perfume or a'box of chocolates for their wives or girlfriends. ~ Men, however, aren't the only - people who leave Christmas shopp- ing until the last minute. Grocery stores were packed with both men and women right up until closing on both Christmas and New Year's Eve. "It's been a zoo in here all day!" exclaimed one tired check-put clerk at the IGA, less than'an hour before the customers at Country Classics closing on New Year's Eve. "It just in the final days of Christmas shop- : ping "were almost entirely men, (Turn to page 7) HALF and HALF ADVERTISING BIG. ..BIG... BIG SAVINGS!
