20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 13, 1987 Sports With thrilling 5-4 win over Richmond Hill in the final game Sportsland wins Junior ringette medals On Saturday, Jan. 10 the Sport- sland Juniors participated in the Port Perry~Ringette. Tournament sponsored by the Lions Club and they won the gold. ~ Port's first game at 9 a.m. was against Woodville. This game saw the Sportsland team jump into an early two goal lead only to have 'Woodville come back to tie it before the halfway mark of the first period. Port Perry kept up the hard work and it paid off before the period end- ed making the score 4-2 going into the final frame. - Port never did look back from this "point on and took control of the "game making the final score 11-8. The Port Perry Sportsland Juniors played some fine Ringette Saturday to take the gold medals at the annual Lions tournament. The final game with Richmond Hill was a real nail-biter with Port Perry coming out on top 5-4, thanks to a goal late in the game (see story). At front - With this win it put the Port team 'against the Mississauga squad at 1 .p.m. In this game the Sportsland team scored 3 quick goals in less than 3 minutes and took a comman- ding lead of 7-3 into the last period. The two teams traded goals throughout the period but Port came out on top 12-7 at the buzzer. Although this| was the first time these 2.teams have ever met there seemed to be an instant rivalry displayed as the game was rough and penalty riddled in the first . period. This games only saving 'grace was the discipline and self- control displayed by the teams to prevent anything serious from erupting. The Port team - their 2 wins went into the finals against another undefeated team' from Richmond Hill at 5 p.m. As the championship game started it was quickly evident that these two teams were evenly mat- ched and were going to battle to the buzzer. " - The first period remained + scoreless until the 3 minute mark ~ when Richmond Hill took the lead. With this goal it meant that this was the first time all day that the Port girls were behind and with this in mind and their determination they quickly remedied this with 2 ioals from left: Kerri Allen, Val White, Terry Childs, "Sherry Harris, Kelly Calloway, Michelle Beare. In back row are Colleen Yorke, Rachel Traynor, Jen Pelow, Kim Caudle and Cindy Harris. Absent Connie Norton. The coaches at back are Dan Harris, Barry Beare and manager Barb Childs. to take a 2-1 lead into the last period. With the teams trading 2 goals a piece early in the frame the score remained in Port's favour 4-3 until with less than 2 minutes left Rich- mond Hill once again tied the score. With the threat of overtime, loom- ing in everyones mind the Port girls put a burst on and scored what turn- ed out to be the winning goal with a minute left in the game. This was a very exciting fast skating game with many heart stop~ ping moments, as the s > seconds tick- _ ed away to the finish. . It was very gratifying to see ringette played as it should be. Scoring for the tournament were Sherry Harris 8 goals, 8 assists, Michelle Beare 7 goals, 7 assists, Cindy Harris 5 goals, 7 assists, Rachel Traynor 4 goals, 2 assists, Kelly Calloway 2 goals, 3 assists, Colleen Yorke 2 goals, 2 assists, Jen 'Pelow 4° assists, Kim Caudle 3 assists and Val White 1 assist. see-saw battle in which Compto The first game of the day was Cable T.V. defeated the Galley ot ~ and Chip 64. Counting for Complon were Mark Jobb 3 goals, Rick Olaisen 2 goals, and Carl Fitzgerald 1 goal, 1 assist. Helping out were Wayne Fox 3 assists, Mike Driscoll'3 assists, Ron Compton 2 assists and Don Card and Jody Peters 1 each. Fighting back for the Galley were Bob Tarbeotton 2 goals, 1 assist, Ted + Blanchard 1 goal, 1 assist, and Dave Dickson 1 goal, 1 assist. Other assists to Denzil Irving and Larry Courtice 1 each. Way to fire "Teddy." The second game of the day was a hard fought game which saw Laroeque Electric and Sportsland fight to a 2-2 tie. Scoring for Laroc- que was Don Orr assisted by Tom Patton and Dave Jackson, and Ken Little assisted by Don Orr. Scorers for Sportsland were Terry Rose from Ken Smart and George Terry Childs played very well'bet- ween the pipes and robbed many players of what they thought were sure goals. On Sunday Jan. 11 the Sportsland Juniors still flying high from their tournament win _had their wings clipped as Mariposa handed them a 6-2 loss in a league game played - here in Port Perry at 1:30 p.m. It was quite evident that the Port girls were a little tired from playing 4 games in two days and although the effort was there they couldn't muster up the steam to ward off the attack of the Mariposa squad. - Scoring for Port were Sherry Har- ris from Cindy Harris - Rachel Traynor from Colleen Yorke. The Sportsland Juniors now have a week to rest their legs and soak their bruises before they play in another tournament on Jan. 17 in sWoodville. Their first game is at 10 It's crowded at top of league Gladish and Ken Smart from Terry Rose and Kelly Lee. In the third game of the day J & -D Carpentry and Crandell's River- hoat "'Battled" it out. There were 20 penalties, while Crandell's went on to win 2-0. Scoring for Crandell's was Richie LeFort 2 goals, assisted by Ron Jeffrey and Reg Templeman. The final game of the day saw Smiths Contracting easily handle BJ Donuts 6-3. Leading the way for Smiths was Larry Page 2 goals, 1! assist, Larry Jackson 1 goal, 1 assist, Carl Durward 1 goal, 1 assist, Brian Callery and John Connors 1 goal each. Assists to Bob Lee 2, Brian Norton, Doug Macsween, Rob Brooker and John Connors 1 each. Markers for BJ's were Bill Bridge 1 goal, 2 assists, Dave Bourgeois 1 goal, 1 assist, Jim Duncan 1 goal, 1 assist, the other assist to Glen Howsam. : The league wishes a speedy recovery to Mike McQuade.
