First place on the line in tilt with Eagles this wir ) 22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, Janvary 13, 1987 The MolJacks split pair of weekend games by John B. McClelland The Port Perry MoJacks split a pair of weekend games, losing 4-3 to the Muskies in Lindsay Friday night, then rolling over the Cobourg Cougers 9-2 Sunday at the Scugog Arena. The victory gives the MoJlacks 41 points so far this season, and with just seven games remaining in the regular schedule, they appear to have a stranglehold on first place in the Walter Crowley Division and Winger Rob Phinney of the Port Perry Mo- Jacks cruises close to the Cobourg net on this play during Junior C action Sunday night at the Scugog Arena. Phinney had a strong game with a goal and assist in the middie period as the Mo- - Jacks broke a close game wide open and went probably will face the Lindsay Muskies in the opening round of the playoffs. Against those Muskies last Friday night, the MoJacks fell behind 3-0 early in the first period, rallied for two power play goals by Darren Nesbitt and Andy Sutch late in the frame, but lost it mid-way through the final period when the Muskies broke a 3-3 tie. Chris Nicholson scored for the MoJacks on the power play late in the middle frame to tie league s R= rem ETE FINS. The MoJacks had Kionty of chances to win this game, but it was just one of those nights when all the bounces went in favour of the Muskies. Port Perry out-shot Lind- say 35 td 24. Paul Goreski played the entire game in the nets for the Mo- Jacks and made some fine stops in the second and third periods to keep his team in the game. Defenseman Rick Wilson drew two assists, while other helpers came from Sean on to an easy 9-2 victory. That win out the Mo- Jacks one point up on Bowmanville i in the overall ings. See story and stats. The Eagles lost 11-10 to Uxbridge. Port Perry will face both . these teams this S coming week. Tweens defea ted Action-packed and hard-skating was the way to describe the ringette game that the Allen Aluminum - Tweens played in Oakwood on Sun- - day. Although Mariposa pulled ahead-by a 4-1 score early in the game, Port Perry put on the pressure until they managed to come back into the lead by a 3-4 score early in the second period! However, the demands of this physical. game took it's toll and Mariposa, by scoring the last goal of the game, squeaked their way to a 7-6 victory. Scoring for Port Perry were Lisa Levy 3 goals, 1 assist, Nicole Slack 2 goals and Christing Mueller 1 goal. Bradley, Len Giagalone and Goreski. pt On Sunday night at the Scugog Arena, the MoJacks again had a so- -so first period opening up a 1-0 lead over the Cougers on an un-assisted goal at 4:40 by Darren Nesbitt. At 2:37 of the second, they went ahead 2-0 with Nesbitt again pulling the trigger, this time on the power play with assists to Sutch and Wilson. The Cougers, who languish in the _celler of the Vern Macgregor Divi- sion, looked like they might make a game of it when Jeff Waldie scored at 6:20. : But the MoJacks put the game away with four un- -answered goals ~ to take a commanding 6-1 lead into the dressing room after 40 minutes of play. - Rob Phinney tipped in a'centering pass at 8:57 from Jim Lewis and Craig Menzies, and less than a minute later, Sean Bradley put on a stick-handling clinic after taking a pass from Lewis. Bradley made a couple of clever moves to the right of the Couger cage and the MoJacks were on top 4-1. At 15:31, Andy Sutch deflected a shot home after a fine rush down the right side by Chris Nicholson and two minutes later Bradley went to work again with a goal from in close as Menzies and Phinney drew the assists. Bradley and Phinney both had solid games for the MoJacks, and their goals in the middle frame were the result of good individual efforts. ~The Cougers got one back early in the third on a power play by Darryl McIlmoyle, but the MoJacks added three more to make the final 9-2. John Miller, Andy Sutch and Mark McVety did the damage. Sutch also had two assists in this period for a five point game, not too shabby for a guy battling a flu bug. This was a clean contest with just four minor penalties to each team, a sharp contrast to the last time these teams met. The MoJacks got a scare late in the game when defensemen Darren Nesbitt took a hard shot on the ankle and he had to be helped from the ice. He was taken to Port Perry Hospital for x-rays, but the injury turned out to be a bad bruise. He may return to action later this week. Nesbitt is one of the premier defensemen in the Central Junior C loop and a serious injury to him would have meant trouble down the stretch for the MoJacks. Nesbitt and Rick Wilson anchor the power play from their point positions. The Mo- Jacks are already hurting on defense with Clay Dempsey nursing a-sore knee and Mike Watters fac- ing a two game suspension from Fri- day's match in Lindsay for a third period skirmish. Brian Stevenson and Jim Lewis played well Sunday night. Hopefully, Nesbitt's ankle and Dempsey's knee will be healed enough to let them get into uniform this Thursday night (Jan. 15) when the MoJacks host the Bowmanville Eagles. Game time for this one is 8:30 p.m. and first place overall will be on the line. This coming Sunday night, the MoJacks will host the Ux- bridge Bruins for a 7:30 start at the Scugog Arena.
