Once by Hillis Wilbur "The Grant Menzies Eagles attend- ed the 21st Georgetown Annual Midget Tournament on the ~ weekend, but came up short losing to London in their second game 5-3. In the first game they played St. Catherines and won 2-0. Scoring for the Eagles" were Philip McBride on the power play assisted by Warren Geer and Dave Burnett. Warren Geer .scored the second goal unassisted when he stole the puck from St. Catherines defenceman behind the net, walked out in front. . and tucked it in the corner. Stacey Ballingall picked up the shut-out. Winning this game put the Eagles - on the *AA" side of the tournament against stiffer competition where they played London Jets. The boys jumped into an early 140 lead only to see London tie-it up. Scoring the first goal for Port, was Mark Barkey assisted by Rob Baker. After London tied it up Philip McBride put the Eagles ahead again assisted by Rob Baker. After this goal the Eagles seemed to sag and London took advantage of their mistakes and took a 5-2 lead. Scor- ~ Junior 'C' Hockey SCUGOG ARENA aga in Port played a solid game and ended up winning this game by a 5-2 score. 'Todd Taylor opened the scoring assisted by Clair Cornish and Kevin Gibson. Combined with this disadvantage the game never started until 11:40 p.m. This made a long day for Port as their first game was at 8 a.m.< Despite all of this the Goreski squad played a very inspired game and prevailed 2-1. This was a very exciting end to end game and the first goal of the game was not scored until there was only 1:37 left to play in the game. Mike Sorley picked up this goal - assisted by Sean Bradbury and Clair Cornish. In the. excitement of the goal Port took a delay of game penalty and 16 seconds later Kingston - tied the game. But Goreski's never say die attitude shoved, us with only 59 seconds left in the game Todd Taylor deflected a Clair Cornish shot into the net. Kevin Gibson picked up the other assist. Goaltender Brad Bricknell made many big saves for the tired Port team and for his effort was named as the game MVP. This win assured Goreski's of winning their division and advancing to the semi-finals on Sunday. In the semi-finals Port faced Ganonoque. Ganonoque jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the second period before Goreski"s fought back 'with 3 straight goals to win the game by a 3-2 score. Kevin Gibson got things started assisted by Todd Taylor and Clair Cornish. Sean Bradbury then tied it up assisted by Todd Taylor. Twen- ty eight seconds later Chris Legere tipped in a pass from Gibson to put | Port ahead for good. Chris McCon- nell played extremely well between the pipes for Port. This victory put Goreski's in the final against. Godfrey. Port started . quick with goals by Kevin Gibson and Clair Cornish in the first minute and a half of play. Godfrey narrow- ed the score to 1 but Gibson scored his second of the game to restore the two goal lead. Godfrey replied with 2 goals of their own to tie the score at 3-3. Sean Bradbury then scored the winning goal while Mike Sorley and Todd Taylor added insurance goals in the third period to give Goreski's their third tournament title in 4 tries. Taylor also picked up 2 assists as did Sorley and Jason Weinhold. Bradbury, Cornish and Gibson all added one assist. This victory was very satisfying as once again the odds were against Goreski's as they were only given a 20 minute rest between.the Ganono-- que game and the final. Also Goreski's played short handed on Sunday as Derek Fitzgerald was in- jured Saturday night and was unable to play on Sunday. ~ Everybody played extremely well on the weekend and deserve credit' for winning this tough tournament. Special mention goes to Brian Ap- pleby who played excellent defen- sive hockey all weekend. : Also the team would like to thank Craig Taylor for helping out on the bench because the coaching staff was limited to one person - without his help this victory would not have been possible.
