Mrs. Earl Reader uh. | Sunday was a very special day at thé Island United when we celebrated the 25th Anniversary of United Church Women 1962-1987 when the new name was taken on. The new midister Miss Edith Bolton as well as the men who at tended had a chance to learn that the 3 U.C.W.'s within the church are alive and enthusiastic workers. A varied program had been planned in . which many members assisted. A brief history of each U.C.W. was presented - Helen Redman read the one for the "Head Memorial" as follows -- Over 50 years ago, Ladies' Aid was quite a thing in the Church. . Many walked from near and far or drove horse and buggy when there was no car. The children caine too and filled up on homemade ice- cream, resulting in many a tummy ache. 'Garden parties were a specialty and occasionally a barrel of cider in- tended for future vinegar' might be found. Jimmy Frise was present on * such an occasion when the barrel "was found and the tap left running till the barrel was empty. His following cartoon in the Star Weekly had lots to say - with a Preacher sitting at a tea table on the lawn so solemn and neat with a bar- rel of cider at his feet. In 1927, I know Ladies' Aid was meeting at the 'Head' Church but ~ it broke up. Not until 1948 did a Student ~ Minister's mother give encourage- , "ment in organizing a group of 27 . women at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Redman with Dorothy Martyn as President to now be called W.A. (Women's Association). These women were considered Chartered members. Today 11 are still alive, 3 are active members while 2 are semi-active. Threugh the 38 years of continued organization, ~ we have lost a few members and gained a few, so that our present total of active and Honorary is 25. In 1973, after 25 years of very ac- tive Service, we celebrated with a Reunion and Church Service at the 'Head' at which Rev. Preston Brown assisted. There was a Memorial for deceased members. In the evening we had a banquet and entertainment in the Oddfellows Hall. Tickets were $2.50. In Jan. '62 we naturally tried to "get used to the new name U.C.W. At this time we had 24 members, 11 of whom are still with us as we enter the new year of 1987. Through the years our numbers have remained true and stable in spite of other at- tractions. Though some of us now many be classed as an older group. I would like to give you the other 2 histories, but they are not available at time of writing. But we "hope to have them next week. Some members may wish to keep this for your scrap books. Miss Bolton then filled us in on a little more detail of the origin and dates of the Women's organization. Mrs. Yvonne Appleton presented ° a beautiful national Logo and ex- 'plained it. . Mrs. Margaret Anne Lamb of Manchester who is presently Presi- dent of Oshawa U.C.W. Presbyterial had been invited to be guest speaker.
