February 1 the Port Perry Sportsland Juniors travelled to Oakwood to play a 4 p.m. game against the Mariposa team The Port girls skated well and with excellent goaltending by Terry Childs managed to take a 3-2 lead in to the final frame. Although the giris kept up the pace the Mariposa squad took adv ahtage of a couple of men- tal errors and eeked out a 54 win Scoring for Port were Sherry Har Arm wrestlers perform sion, while Todd finished fourth in the heavyweight class for wrestlers over 200 pounds. Cer- nish. This game will help celebrate Ringette Week 8 as goodwill ambassadors to put Port Perry on the arm wrestling map. They rapidly emerged as crowd favourites; much to the delight of the tournament promoters. "We really appreciate all the words of encouragement and sup- port we are getting from well wishers in Port Perry." Mike told the Star on Monday. Both Mike and Todd. along with Wes Johnson and Rick Huntington are now preparing for an important round of competition February 14 at the Metro East Trade Centre in Pickering This will be a qualifying round for the Canadian finals to be held later this year. The top eight in each class will qualify for the Canadians and then the top four will earn the right to compete at the World Champion- ship this year in Atlantic City, New Jersey The Port Perry contingent would greatly appreciate some local sup- porters cheering them on at the Pickering event February 14 Going into Friday's game, the high flying Bruins have 46 points, while the MoJacks have 45. This is the last regular game for Uxbridge, while the MoJacks will finish their regular season on Saturday night in Little Britain: This is essentially a "nothing game' unless the Friday encounter in Uxbridge ends up in a tie. Then a win over Little Britain the next evening will give MoJacks first place in their division. Confusing? A little bit. But one thing is for certain, the MoJacks will meet either Lindsay or Little Britain for game one Sunday at the Scugog "Arena in the best of seven semi- - "finals with face off at 7:30 P.M. And barring injuries or further suspensions, the MoJacks should be able to ice a full team fer the playoffs, something they, have not been able to do the last fow league games. A short-staffed MoJack squad (just 13 skaters) went into Lindsay last Friday evening and lost 8-6 as the Muskies rapped in six goals in the final period. The MoJacks were missing four regular defensemen for this gale and captain Andy 'Sutch went out with an ankle injury in the second period. Bob St. Jules led the MoJacks with two goals and two assists, while Sean Bradley netted a pair and singles went to Sutch and Mark McVety. Five of the MoJack goals came on the power play. : For the Muskies, Andrew Camp + bell -had-a- hot. hand. in. the. third] period as he scored a natural hat- trick. Steve Black had a pair, in- cluding a short-handed marker. But on Sunday night at the Scugog Arena, the MoJacks rebounded with perhaps their best game since Christmas as they nipped the tough, hard skating Little Britain Mer- chants 3-2 to keep their first place hopes alive. The Merchants were fresh from an 8-3 win Saturday night over Uxbridge. In Port Perry Sunday night, the Merchants opened up an early 2-0 lead as Jerry Kea popped in goals at 5:46 and 8:13 of the first period. - The score remained the same through the middle frame as Brian Tarleton for the MoJacks and Ron Stewart for the Merchants were forced to come up with numerous tough stops in goal. By the mid-point in the third, the MoJacks were taking the play away by Scott Howey Well done to Ted Griffen's and Vern Powell's Seniors rinks whe competed in the Seniors-Zone Level this past weekend in Uxbridge. Both teams had some good games and curled well with the Griffen rink 'staying in contention until Sunday 3fternoon A Port Perry team returned to Quebec City again this year for the annual Bonspiel held there. This year the team came away victors winning the Birkes Trophy, which is from Little Britain who had just 13 skaters in the line-up. But they were unable to get the puck past Stewart in the net. - - Finally, at 11:46, Mark McVety jumped"on a loose puck near the crease and hammered it home to make it 2-1. Four minutes later, the MoJacks got the equalizer on the power play. Len Giacalone pulled the trigger from in close. With 3:08 left, the Merchants took a couple of penalties and with 1two man advantage, the MoJacks turn- ed on the power. It paid off with 1:52 to play as Rob Phinney corralled a -puck in the deep slot and rifled a: hard shot. Stewart got a piece of the shot but it trickled over the goal line. The win was an important one for Port Perry. It kept their first place hopes very much alive, and for the first time in many games, the team played pretty solid hockey. "Darrin Nesbitt had three assists in this one. Dave Sims had a fine: game along the blue line, perhaps his best as a MoJack. Rob Phinney and Len Giacalone also played very well and that's a good omen with "playoffs just around the corner. The MoJacks were missing three regulars for this one. Andy Sutch was out with a bad ankle, but he should be ready for the weekend' Rick Wilson and Jim Lewis are ser- ving suspensions. Wilson will return to action Friday night in Uxbridge, while Lewis will be back for the first playoff game. The MoJacks have missed these two guys along the 8 blue line the past few games. PLAYOFF FORMAT In all three divisions of the Cen- tral Junior C Hockey League, the playoff format will be as follows. The first place club faces the last place team in a best of seven, while the sccond and third place teams meet in a best of seven. The two win- ners will then play a best of seven to determine a divisional champion. The three divisional champions will then meet in a home and home round robin series to eliminate one team. The top two will then play a best of seven to decide the overall league championship. For the MoJacks, who have played some outstanding hockey most of the season, the playoff road begins Sunday night at the Scugog Arena against either Lindsay or Lit- tle Britain, Gametime is 7:30 P.M. Curling Corner one of several events in the bonspiel. The bonspiel takes place over a week long period with approximate- ly a dozen games being played in that time. The Port Perry entry won their last five games on the way to capturing the event. Team members inclpde Ted Grif- fen, Paul Griffen, Ralph Fairman, Roger Watson, Steve Mowat. and Bill Philips.
