yr Strong interest in Borelia Co-op housing All 70 units in the Borelia Co- operative Housing project will be snapped up before construction of the town houses and apartments is completed this fall. That was the assessment of Andy Baca, secretary of the Borelia Co- operative non-profit Housing Cor- poration at a public meeting held in Port Perry last Thursday evening. With the cost of houses sky- rocketing in the Port Perry area, and the apartment vacancy rate at almost zero, it's little wonder that nearly 150 people showed up at the public meeting to find out more about the Borelia Project now under construction on land immediately west of the Port Perry Plaza on Highway 7A. Mr. Baca told the Star the purpose of the meeting was to introduce peo- ple to the concept and philosophy of co-operative housing, show them the physical lay-out of the project and provide them with application forms for residency. « .He said over the past two years, the Co-op Board of Directors has received enquiries from 150 people interested in the kind of housing that will be available when construction if complete in September. "We don't forsee any problems getting the people for the units," he noted. The rents will be set by the provin- cial government the first year (bas- ed on market conditions in the Port Perry area) and the Co-op an- ticipates the rents will range from $400 monthly for a one bed-room apartment to over $600 monthly for a three bed-room town house with basement and garage. Mr. Baca said the committee will give preference to people already living in the Scugog Township area, - or those who may have lived here at one time and want to return to live here. Three-quarters of the units will be allotted to persons who are eligible for rent subsidies from the provin- cial government (based on family income) while residents in the re- maining 25 percent of the units will _ pay the full market rate without any subsidy. Future increases in rental rates will be set by the Co-operative based on increases in the cost of operating the project. Mr. Baca said that while there has been a strong interest expressed already in the project, applications will be accepted.
