After hav- ing had such a relatively mild winter to date everyone has been caught completely off guard with the deep-freeze treatment that we were assaulted with over the weekend. At least we should be thank-ful that we have not received the abundance of snow that our Maritime neighbours have. 'Welcome home to our neighbours Jill Coffey who recently underwent surgery in Oshawa. We hope your recovery will be swift and that you'll soon be feeling a whole lot better than you have during the last few months. Tragedy struck again last weekend when two teenage girls lost their lives in a terrible car accident just east of Uxbridge which sent the rother of one of the girls to a Toron- to hospital where he is undergoing treatment for injuries sustained in the crash. We extend our deepest sympathy -to Ron and Sheila: Williamson and family in the loss of their daughter Ronda and to Patrick and Barbara La Rose and family in the loss of their daughter Kathy 'We all share a sense of loss and sorrow whien a young life is so sud- denly snuffed out. Sympathy is also extended to Marion and Ivan Barrett in the loss of Marion's nephew the late Mr Robt. Holliday of Blackstock. Bob has been a cattle drover for years and was widely known and highly respected in and around Scugog Township. He has been struggling against a terminal illness for quite some time but succumbed to jt last week. We also extend our sympathy to his wife and family. . I must apologize to Roy Smith for misplacing a notice that he had sent to me regarding a public awareness event on Healthy Heart Living which was held at the Oshawa Cen- tre during this past weekend. Durham Save-a-Heart will conduct a Cardiopulmonary Resuscita'ion Course (C.P.R.) for any group of at least six persons at a time and place JEWELLERY & TANNING INC. 263 Queen St., Port Perry 985-8555 Beat those Mid-Winter Blahs with a visit to our Tanning Salon. When someone that we love dies, every fibre in our being attempts to deny that death has taken place. Admission to the death of someone in whom we have a strong emotional investment, such as a mother, father or spouse. is an admission that we must make n.zjor adjustments in our lives This ad- justment 1s pamntul From the time we are born, our automatic response to pain is to run from it. The first ime we touched something hot we jerked our hand away from the hot object to avoid the pain. if we felt no pain our hand would be badly damaged With this in mind let us realize that pain is a positive rather than a negative experience. Pain sensors are something which are 'ncor- 'porated into a human being which tell ys that something is wrong and therefore protective to us It we have a sore stomach we know that something inside our bodes "is not functioning properly. We than seek a specialist in the function of the human body, a medical doctor, who can assess the disfunction and suggest . soe method of correcting the problem. Once the problem is corrected. our body would be working properly again and the pain would be gone. Occa- swonally the corrective procedure involves an operation Although the opera- tion would be painful for a time. it would heal and we would be healthy again! it we rejected the operation because it was painful, the pain would grow continually stronger indicating that the problem 1s worsening until eventually. we would de When someone close to us dies. we experience emotional pain We feel this emotional pain because something 1s wrong Knowing that something within us is wrong, wefseek out a professional who will help us correct the problem so that we can regain our health The professional in the circumstances of death is a funeral director The funeral director will talk with you and assess your needs He will then sug-- gest an exercise, or funeral, which may be painful for a ime (hke an opera tion) but will establish a solid foundation for the healing process of grief which will return us to an emotional state of normalcy We could take medication which would temporarily reheve the symp toms of physical pan when our body isn't working properly, however. the __ problem would still exist and probably continue to worsen. An so it 1s with the emotional pain of the death of a loved one We could numb our minds with drugs or alcohol to temporarily reheve the symptoms or pam of our grief. but, we are far better off to face up to the temporary pain of a funeral and our loss so that we can begin to heal. emotionally, and become whole once again E very indwidual ite 1s unique and tharelore the needs of every mdonidual are unique When a death occurs in your family, place yourself under the care of a professional funeral director who is trained to assess your needs and prescribe an exercise which will help you establish a foundaton on which you can build your healing process of grief Thig healing process of grief / will carry you back to an emotionally healthy hfe once agan PLEASE DIRECT YOUR COMMENTS TO HAROLD WAGG, 985-2171 of mutual convenience. C.P.R. is not paticularily difficult to learn but it certainly can provide a vital link between life or death for a person who is strickened with a heart attack, for example, or many other life threatening situations. If you are interested in learning more about this life-saving techni- que please call Barbara Hiemstra at 571-1152 for additional information. Birthday greetings to Miss Dana | Jewell who has just celebrated her special day and to Don Adams and his wife Norma who also topped off their cakes with another candle this weekend. Best wishes for a happy year ahead! Our Good Neighbour gals and their husbands will be enjoying the hospitality of Heather and Al Wray on Saturday evening when we meet at their home and spend the even- ing skating on their pond. All Good Neighbours girls and hubbies are in- vited to attend. The Robinglade Estates Ladin: Group are invitéd to attend their next meeting at the home of their hostess Mrs. Ann Sandiford on Mon- day, February 23 at 8:00 p.m. Don and I along with my sister and her husband, John and Shirley Foster of Port Perry spent an en- joyable weekend in Ottawa atten- ding their annual winter festival Winterlude. The ice sculptures and snow sculptures were absolutely breathtaking and I might add so was the weather at a very cold - 30°c! However, we braved the elements, donned our red flannels and our blades and joined hundreds.of other crazy fools who didn't know enough to come in out of the cold, and skated down the Rideau canal which boasts having the longest skating rink in the world. That was three days ago and I'm still chipping the 'ice and frost off my feet! Several folks from this area at- tended John Deere Days at Utica Farm Equipment last Tuesday. John Deere 'equipment' is celebrating its i50th Anniversary and the owner and co-owner, Arnold and Gail Kerry of Utica Farm Equipment, received a plaque from the company honouring their 20th Anniversary of selling John Deere equipment. Many of those attending were the happy recipients of some very lovely door prizes. Congratula- tions Gail and Arnold! The students of Greenbank Public School spént a day away from the Enjoy fresh veggies now With just a little bit of effort. you can enjoy home grown leaf lettuce and other fresh salad vegetables in February -- without owning a greenhouse. Indoor vegetable gardens are appropriate even for apartment dwellers, says Universi- ty of Guelph horticulturalist Doug Ormrod. If you have a south-facing window, you've got the perfect loca- tion to grow a number of edible plants indoors. If youdon't, you can still have a garden by using an in- expensive cool white fluorescent light, he says. Any kind of leaf lettuce. head let- tuce and spinach can be grown. as well as onions, mustard and beets for their leayes. Chinese cabbage is a successful indoorplant, but don't waste your garden space on radishes, Ormrod says. You'll get much greater productivity with leafy vegetables that are harvested a few leaves at a time without pull- ing up the whole plant. he says Vegetables grow more slowly in doors and require fertilizer for nutrients. The major cause of failure in indoor gardening is over- watering. Ormrod says usual grind of classes and enjoyed a winter carnival organized by the staff and assisted by some loyal parent supporters.
