Team qualifies for the Provincial playoffs PORT PERRY STAR -- Tues. February 24, 1987 -- 25 Added incentive for the Port Perry Petites On Monday February 16, the Brutons 1.D A Petites were told that if they could beat Whitby in a best of 3, the girls would be in the "Provincial Playoffs." Port stepped on the ice and took a quick lead having Whitby down 3-1 atthe end of the first period. A stub- born Whitby team came back and tied the game at 4 a piece before Port got back on track. The defence of Kim, Jennifer, Michelle and Tracy tightened up and excellent stops by Amy, turned Here we Look out Provincials, here we come!! J The Bruton's I.D A. Petites have earned the right to go to the 'B' Pro- vincials being held in Pickering on April 23,4 and 5. They did this by beating Whitby two straight games in a best of three series. This is the first time a team from Port Perry has ever gotten this far! Port Perry will go as. the representative of Central Region and will meet the best team from each of the other five regions in the back the Whitby shooters allowing the forwards to take over. With some good passing from Denna, Kelly and Tafiya along with hard checking by the other forwards Lyndsay, Shannon -and Chrissy, Port took the lead again and won by the score of 7-5. Scoring for Port was Denna Lovering 4 goals, Tanya Towns 2 ~ goals and Lyndsay Dutkewich 1 - goal. Assists went to Lyndsay 2, Kel- ly Menzies 2, Tanya 2, Kim Pop- compl] province plus the host team of Pickering. Provincials are the ultimate goal for a 'B' team and are a step up from regionals. It took a lot of team work to get this far and the girls should be very proud of themselves. With good team play, lots of hard work and determination these girls should do well in the Provincials. Lets hope that 'We came, We saw, We con- quered' and 'Another one bites the dust' ring true for the Bruton's [.D.A. Petites. Juniors defeat Cornish 'Stars' Our special event for Ringette Week was a fast paced game bet- ween the R.H. Cornish * "Allstars" and the Junior girls. This game proved to be a crowd pleaser as the ref closed his eyes to a few unusual tactics by the teachers and some loud complain- ing by the Juniors. The teachers proved to be strong competition as they skillfully glid- ed about, passing the ring like seasoned Ringette players. The Juniors with only eight players had to hustle to keep the pace but proved themselves in the end, skating to a 4-2 victory. - Representing the R.H. Cornish teachers was Brian Madill, Dan Volman, Dave Brownson with 1 goal and 1 assist, Ken Smart 1 goal, Sheila Prachan, Jim Justynski 1 assist, Loran Prentice, Rob Smart 1 assist, Wayne Addison and Doug Brown. Junior girls were Kerri Allen, Rachel Traynor with 1 assist, Collen Yorke 1 goal, 2 assists, Val White, Cindy' Harris 1 assist, Kelly Calloway 2 goals, Michelle Beare 1 goal, 1 assist and Terry Childs who . played a great game between the mL A i. This victory over Whitby in Port Perry meant the girls had a chance to take the best 2 out of 3 in Whitby's Iroquois Park on Saturday February 21. This game was a see saw battle through the first period with Port taking a one goal lead in- to the second period. With only one period left to play Port picked up the tempo and poured it on scoring 8 goals in less than 9 minutes. After a couple of quick goals Tanya dropped back to For the first time ever a Ringette team from Port Perry has advanced to thé provincial playdowns. The Bruton IDA Petite 'B' won the honour by defeating Whitby two straight in re- cent games. The Provincials will be held early April (see story for details). Leading the way was Port's cap tain Denna Lovering with 9 goals, Kelly Menzies 2 goals and Lyndsay 1. Assists went to Tanya Towns 4, Lyndsay 4, Kelly 1 and Kim Pop- pleton 1. The forwards of Chrissy and Shannon may not have scored - but, worked hard in a checking and passing role for a well deserved PORY PERRY RINGETTE team effort and victory in a 2 game sweep of Whitby and a shot at the | Provincial Championships As-with every victory there may be a downside! Port's effort wasn't there at Sunday's league game against Mississauga and the girls came away on the short side of the score 7-2 Scoring for Port was Denna 2 goals, Tanya and Kim with one assist each.
