} } Snowmobile mishap claims Scugog Island man A 33 year old Scugog Island man is dead following a snowmobile ac- cident on the lake near his home late Saturday night. Daniel Mark Dalton (Danny) died in Port Perry's Community Memorial Hospital at 2:45 a.m. Sun- day, about three hours after the accident. According to Durham Regional Police, Dalton was out snowmobil- ing on the lake with a friend, Kevin Bath of Locust Hill, when the two became separated. Unable to find Dalton, Bath returned to his friend's home hoping to find him there. When, he discovered he hadn't returned, he went out searching. Shortly after, police say Bath found Dalton lying conscious in the snow near Amberside Dr. at Port- view Beach. With the help of Dalton's wife Lin- da and her sister Elaine Visser, Bath attempted to place the injured man on a tobaggan but was unsuc- cessful. An ambulance was called and he was taken to hospital. Dalton, a truck dispathcer, hus- "band, and father of one, died a few hours later. Police believe the (from page 1) the well. Standing on the pipes, he' hoisted Erin in his arms up to the surface, where she was swept off to a waiting ambulance and taken to Port Perry's Community Memorial Hospital. But for PC Wilson, Sgt. Hudson, Clive Boyd and Brad Hurst, the hard part was still to come. With nothing more than strength and determina-. tion, they hauled PC Heasman out of the well, in a slow process that ~ skinned knuckles and wrenched backs. "It was quite a haul up," Sgt. Hud- son said. Erin, meanwhile, was already in hospital being treated for various facial injuries as well as' bumps, bruises and exposure. Sgt. Hudson said her body temperature was down to 30 degrees when she was * rescued. "She was lucky she wasn't down there any longer," he added. be released from hospital on Tues- day, February 24. Parents ask for school sidewalk The Scugeg Township council roads committee will be studying a request for sidewalks leading to Cartwright Central Public School in Blackstock. The request for the sidewalks was made to Township council February 16 by members of the School's Parent Advisory Association. In a brief presented to council, the Association notes "concern" over Girl, 5, rescued - was still nervous and shaken but she seemed to be getting along better than the day of the accident. Her father, Don Hoekstra, can't thank enough the people who rescued his daughter. "We are really impressed and thankful that everything happened so quickly (tosave Erin), he said. "Thanks really go to the police department and the department." First thing Monday morning he was already working toreplace the old well's cap, and both he and his wife Mary want to warn other parents to inspect the condition of their own wells. "We don't want to see this happen again,"' Mrs. Hoekstra said. PC Heasman was also treated in hospital for facial abrasions, as well as an injury to his side, both resulting from his trip down the 7 well. And while he and the others who . hel bring Erin out of the well Erin's parents expect she would ped bring deny they're heroes, there's a little girl and her family at Honey's Cor- ners who think otherwise. 985- 8435 165 Q ueen Street, Port Perry OPEN -- Monday to Thursday 9 AM to 5 PM Friday 9 AM to 6 PM -- Saturday 9 AM to 1 PM fire the lack of sufficient sidewalk on Alexander Sireet in Blackstock 'to ensure the safety of children who must walk this road every day." The Association says that just over 100 children walk this route along Alexander Street in the mor- nings and afternoons and 55 use it during the noon hour. _ The Association is asking for sidewalks along both sides of Alex: ander Street and a cross walk on Scugog Street. The group appearing before coun- cil felt the' problem was complicated - by the fact there is no clear defini- tion of the vehicle turning area at the intersection of Scugog and Alex- -ander Streets, including the parking area for the local Beckers Store. "There is a danger for both "pedestrian and driver alike on the north side of Alexander Street (as there are) no curbs or sidewalks to limit the vehicle traffic," brief presented to council by the Parents Association. The Roads committee will submit: a report on this issue to the council in the near future.
