IH A os El Ht ry SI SH IH NE NHI a Nn 10 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 3, 1987 by Cathy Olliffe I had a full hour in which to take pictures of the local Boy Scouts' Winter Fun Day. A full hour, before I had to be at the Oddfellows Lode to take a dignified photo of a 60th anniversary A full hour. Lots of time, 1 thought to myself, parking my car next to the Orange Lodge on Shirley Road, where the Scouts were supposed to be * Well, | knew they weren't going to be in the building. I was told the T Lunchtime at the Pine Ridge District Scouts Winter Fun Day meant roasting weiners over an open fire. Above. from left, David Walker, Steve Mairs, Scott Davis and Jason MacDonald get boys would be in the vicinity of the lodge, somewhere behind Harvey Graham's place "Great!" | actually said, to no one but the trees and the snowbanks The lodge itself was deserted so | headed across the road-and looked over the guard rails into a valley a couple hundred feet below Not a human being was in sight Not a snowmobile to be seen. Not even a toboggan. Just a few foot- "prints heading down the hill. a If you hear trouble ... Turn it over to the pros! "Well," I thought, "I'll just head tobogganing. down there and take a look around. The kids might be around the cor- ner behind those trees or something." The walk down the hill was a little more difficult than anticipated. Had Saturday aftegffodn's weather been colder and less damp, | probably wouldn't have sunk up to my knees at every step. As it was, | was soak- ed by the time I reached the bottom. - But even in the heart of the valley there was no sign of human life. My "full hour" had shrunk by 15 %-1 ready for chow. Should | forget this, I wondered, or should I go further" "I've already come this far," | said to myself. 'Might as well walk a bit more." Unfortunately, there was nowhere to go but up--up another steep hil], that is. Wishing I had snowshoes, | trudged up the other side of the valley, feeling the beginnings of what was to become a steady rain trickling down the back of my neck. Another 10 minutes had gone by by the time I reached the top of the hill--and still no sign of any Scouts. "Oh this is really great," 1 sneered. 'Here I am in the middle of nowhere. The Scouts' have pro- bably gone home and I'll end up be- ing attacked by wolves." I eyed the bushes fearfully. The branches swayed mysterious- ly in the howling wind. I imagined yellow orbs watching me, ready to tear my throat out. And as I turned to flee, I spotted smoke rising in the distance. Fun for the Scouts, not reporters Quite a distance, as a matter of fact. But still, it was smoke. and where there's smoke, there's camp- fire. Scouts! Like a bloodhound I tracked the elusive curls of woodsmoke, plowing through drifts of snow, up and down hills, through clumps of trees. Finally, I turned the final corner and was rewarded with the sight of two 'toboggans, closely followed by a boy. A boy! A real boy. Undoub- tably a Scout, even though he wasn't wearing green shorts. The Scout in question saw me. pt instead of showing me to the camp- site, he fled, probably thinking this wet apparition with a camera was Grizzly Adams' sister. Undaunted, I followed him and wound up in the middle of the camp where the first thing I saw was a Canadian flag (Halleluiah!). a campfire (Warm!), and a dozen boys cooking weiners on sticks. This, I thought triumphantly, is it 'And it was. Trouble is, my "full hour" was now reduced by 45 | minutes and I hadn't even taken any pictures yet. i (Turn to page 14) One of the more challenging 2tpechs of Winter Fun Day was building survival shelters in teams of three. This team, consisting of Jason Williams, Bobby Crawford and Jeremy Williams, had much to be proud of with their finished results. 356 KING ST.
