Township roads committee chairman Don Cochrane and roads superintendent Ronn MacDonald met last week in Toronto with top officials with the province ial gover- nment. "We were well received. But there are a lo of other municipalities lining up for the same thing: more money," said councillor Cochrane: He said that while provincial of- ficials appeared sympathetic to Scugog's plight and unique problems when it comes to rodd maintenance, it will probably be several weeks before the Township learns if the government will con- tribute more in subsidy this year. In 1987, the provincial road grant allocation for Scugog will amount to $776,000. That may seem like a Council tries again to raise the bridge (From page 1) Bridge prevents may of the larger boats from entering the lake via the Scugog River from the Kawar- . thas. The Township council has already spent $2500 on an engineering study to determine what is involved in raising the bridge and a local contractor says the actual construction werk can be dope for about $11,000. Township council agreed Mon- day that is prepared to put another $2500 towards construction, and the local Chamber of Commerce $1500. Marina operators around Lake Scugog, who would benifit from the in- creased boat traffic if the bridge was raised, have also agreed to contribute to the cost. After all, the bridge is in Lindsay, and it probably needs a good overhaul, anyway. Mayor Taylor and a delegation of two councillor will make an ap- pearance infront of Lindsay Town council in the very near future to ask for a $3,000 con- tribution towards raising the _bridge. And the yacht club on Lake Scugog will also be asked to make a contribution of $500. If the necessary funds for the bridge raising can be lined up, the work likely will take place in June, this year. . Jane's sland Hair 'Design lot of money, but it represents just a 2.2 percent increase over the previous year, and it's not enough to prevent the continual deterioration of the roads and streets in the municipality. Figures show that Scugog now has 374 KM of roads to maintain, and about 30 per cent of those roads are now - considered "'inadequate" by provincial stan- dards. By contrast, just four years ago, the Township had 364 KM of roads and just 15 per cent were considered inadequate by MTC Ironically, for a municipality this size, Scugog"s roads on average are in better shape than most others. And it's this factor, Said councillor Cochrane, that may be preventing the Township from receiving higher subsidy allocations. . He suggested Scugog "is being penalized" because the roads are much better than other municipalities which are receiving - more grants. However, he said the situation will get worse in Scugog-because of | the dramatic increase in the "amount of traffic over Township roads, especially heavy traffic like trucks and buses. : Councillor Cochrane noted that . the unique characteristics of ~ Scugog Township with riumerous' narrow lake-side roads and others | that are dead-end, all add to the yearly maintenance costs for the | Township.
