A team of curlers thrown together at the last moment, to fill in for an out-of-town rink who had to cancel, emerged victorious at last Saturday's Lake Scugog Lumber Bonspiel. Goreski overpowers Utica The first game of the best of three finals between Utica and Goreskis wasn't even close as Goreskis came out on top of a 7-1 final. Utica missed two good chances in the first as they fired both over the top of the net allowing Goreskis a 2-1 lead at the buzzer. Dave Dickson got both tallies for Goreskis from Ed Sexton and Tom Powell with the Down brothers, Bill and Chester replying for Utica. The second was all Goreskis as SAVE UP TO they walked away with an addi- tional five markers. Dickson set up Sexton on the first shift of the second half to get the ball rolling. Ken Fraser then set up Dickson for his hat trick with Danny Taylor and Bruce Woodrow hooking up for goal number five. The final two went to Dickson from Sexton and Mark Lee from Powell. The hard- working, hard-checking team from Hastings defeated our girls 14 to 6, with one of their players scoring 11 goals, 5 of them unassisted. Despite an excellent effort the Port Perry team could not over- come such a powerhouse. Amanda Webb scored twice and earned one assist; Valerie Payne scored twice; Leea Kinnunen and Brandy Harris also scored and Vanessa Mumford assisted on three goals. Mary Rose Tang scored two quick goals in the final minutes of the game for the Port Perry Maple Leafs to tie the garfie at 4. Christina " Connell and Scott Prechitko each got one goal to finish off the scoring for the Leafs. Scoring for Oshawa, were Tyler Pitcher with 2 and Regan Syrett and Blair Wood with 1 each. In the second game, Port Perry Oilers beat the Oshawa team by a score of 4 to 3. Scoring for the Oilers were Mike Tripp with 2 and Sean Sauter and Kevin Pearce with 1 each. Regan Syrett scored 2 goals for Oshawa while Tim Wherry got the other goal. In Blackstock on the 24th the junior team of the Fire Balls and Jets beat the Flyers and North Stars by a score of 6 to 3. For Fire Balls and Jets from Port Perry, Steven Lawrence, Cameron Flieler, Brad Howcroft,; Jeremy Gibson, Jeff Whitfield and David Clouthier each scored one goal. For Blackstock, Ryan Peter scored 2 goals and Eric Russell with 1. : In the seniors the Blackstock Bruins beat the Oshawa team by a score of 9 to 6. Martin Stubbs got the hat trick for the Bruins while Jay Buma scored 2 and Jason Cliff, Mike Hepburn, Peter Simms and Mike Leach each got 1. Scoring for Oshawa were Blair Wood and Regan Syrett with 2 each and singles went to Tyler Pitcher and Tim Wherry. In the second game, the Cart- wright Canadians outplayed the Oshawa team and won by a score of 5 to 1. Chris Chorostecki scored 4 goals for the Canadians while Bren- don Agnew got one. Feb. 28th the Bruton's IDA Petites travelled to Markham for the final league game of the season. Port struck early and put two quick goals past Markham"s goalie. Markham came back strong with 3 "unassured goals before Port netted another for a 3-3 tie at the end of the first period. The second period saw Port come out flat and watch Markham take the lead until the final buzzer. Port had numerous power plays during the game, but didn't capitalize on most of these op- portunities.
