In 1977, the Mobility and Maintenance Program, with the sponsorship of the Metropolitan Toronto Police Association, was established to provide modifications and maintenance of electric wheelchair driving controls for young people unable to operate regular commercially available controls. As the team gained ex- perience in modifying the conven- tional: controls, more and more young people, who previously depended on others to transport them, have been able to experience the joy of independent mobility. For some young people! though, controls could not be modified suf- ficiently. for them to drive an elec- tric wheelchair. The staff have met this challenge by developing special >a worth of research projects had to be turned down due to the lack of funds. Somewhere in those projects could have been the control or cure for Cystic Fibrosis so desperately need- ed.
