MACKEY & BAILEY BARRISTERS & SOLICITORS Saturday Mornings - 9: :00 a a. m. to 12, noon Lake Scugog Lumber Building Oshawa Rd., Port Perry (416) 989-7391 _m - Students are real cut-ups Tie-ing one off! "It's a brand new tie, see? The price tag is still on it," says Prince Albert Public School Principal Bruce Cornwall, holding up a ghast- ly, wide, psychadelic remnant of the early 70's. "It's just," he says with a twinkle in his eye, 'that I've never worn it. I guess I've been saving it for just such an occasion." The occasion in question was the school's magazine subscription fun- draising drive. For the last while, students have been busy selling subscriptions in order to raise money for the school. The campaign was highly suc- cessful, and one can't help wonder if the grand prize had anything to do with the large amount raised. The grand prize"? Well, the top 21 subscription sellers had an opportunity last Fri- day afternoon to take a sharpened pair of scissors and clomp off a chunk of the principal's tie. A wee bit of revenge, one might say. And sure enough, the entire school gathered in the auditorium to yell their approval as they watched the 21 top fundraisers ruin Mr. Cor- nwall's not-so-fashionable neck- piece. Philip Edgar was the first, since he raised the most money, a grand total of $317.18. Gavin Cochrane came second, with $274.12, and Jason Fudge came third with $253.71. Sheena Glass came fourth with $249.76, but all 17 students who followed her had a chance to take home a piece of tie. Mr. Cornwall wasn't totally taken advantage of, however. When the last student had taken the last chunk of tie, leaving only the knot at his throat, he brazenly plucked out the hidden small end of the tie, which he had sneakily tucked inside his shirt before the tie-cutting ceremony. That action produced spontaneous and overwhelmingly deafening choruses of *'Cheater" from the au- dience members, many of whom ap- proached the principal afterwards and asked if he or she could cut off Don't lug a vacuum! "No," was his curt reply, delivered with a grin. And while those students weren't successful in cutting off Mr. Cor- nwall's tie, the entire school was successful in raising more than $4,000 to be used for activities like school trips, and new team sweaters. You might say everyone shared a piece of the tie. Er, pie. Sheena Glass, one of the top magazine subscription sellers in Prince Albert Public School, managed to sell $249.76 worth of subscriptions.
