In an effort to shed some light on what's going, Star editor John B. McClelland tracked down Bette Hodgins, who works at the Com: munity Hospital. Bette is the co-chairman of the Planning Committee for an up- coming Fitness Challenge in Scugog Township and she is working hard to drum up some public interest in that Challenge, which will be held at the end of May. Here is a transcript of the inter- ~ view between the Star editor and Bette. We trust it helps to clear up some of the mysteries about the Phantom references. John: Why did you choose to in- volve the Phantom? Bette: The Planning Committee felt that the Phantom, as a true symbol of community "spirit," would be the best mascot for pro- moting the Fitness Challenge. We felt sure that the Phantom would want to lend his name to such a wor- "thy cause -- one that joins the com- munity together in an effort to en- courage a healthy, more active lifestyle. John: What is the Fitness Challenge? Bette: It is a challenge issued to all communities from Participac- tion and the Ministry of Tourism and Recreation to participate in 15 minutes of exercise on Challenge Day, May 27th. The community with 'the highest percentage of participa- tion wins the challenge. The municipalities of Ajax and Newcas- tle have directly challenged Scugug Township to demonstrate which is the fittest. Of course, more.of the details of upcoming events will be outlined in the Phantom's Fitness Press Conference. John: Press Conference? Bette: Yes -- the Phantom Press (From page 1) weather improved. 'I was planning on going out and checking it later," he said. The well, about 40 feet deep, was built approximately 25 years ago, with a square concrete cap. In the Conference will be held at 7:30 p.m on Wednesday, March 11th in the Hospital Library and will act as a kick-off for Scugog's Fitness Challenge activities. The Phantom has issued invitations to citizens all over the township to come out and 'hear more about the Challenge. We are hoping for a good response because the Fitness Challenge is aimed at raising everyones' level of awareness about the importance of regular physical activity --and that is good for all of us. By the way, the people of Scugog will be hearing a lot more about the Fitness Challenge in the next few weeks. So stay tuned. Youngster is rescued from 40 foot well autumn, Mr. Melnichuk noticed a crack in the cap and mixed up some cement to fix it. ; "It seemed firm enough-it held my weight then," he said. "But I guess with this weather, the freez- ing, then thaw, then freezing again, it just fell apart. When it did, it was like powder." With no children normally around the household, except for visitors like Dustin, Mr. Melnichuk figured he could wait until spring to take a look at his well. Erin Hoekstra's in- cident frightened him, and he wanted to make sure his own well was in good condition. - "I shouldn't have pro- crastinated,"' he said, feeling bad- ly. "If something had happened to Dustin, 1 never would have been - able to drive up this driveway again." Mr. Melnichuk informed the Star of Dustin's 'adventure' because he doesn't want any other parents or grandparents to experience what his family or the. HoeKstra"s went through. "People should go out to their wells right now and take a mallet to them, to make sure the caps are in good shape," he urged. Mr. Melnichuk is already arrang- ing to have a specially reinforced * cap put back on his well, and in the meantime, he has weighted down a metal picnic table on top of the well to ensure no one else falls in. "My wife's still shook up about it," he said. 'And so am 1."
