WSL i nn ut Nestleton-Caesarea News by Mabel Cawker World Day of Prayer Celebrates Centennial On Friday, March 6th, the wor- ship service held in St. John's Anglican Church, Blackstock, was most effeetive!' The service was prepared by the Women's Inter- Church Council of Canada with the Centennial theme, "Come & Re- joice' (1887-1987) ... a very special Ecumenical day with all churches within Cartwright participating. It was nice to greet the Rev. M. Ansley Tucker of St. John's and Rev. Dale Davis of the United Church after the service. With Linda McLaughlin presiding at theorgan ... Mrs. Grant (Lorna) Edgerton ex- president of the ACW tended a cordial welcome to the seventy folks attending ... both men and women. The interesting guest speaker was student Susan Sheen who is present- ly attending Trinity College study- ing for the Ministry. Sisan is in her second year of training and left us with many thoughts to take home! In keeping with the Centennial year, a coal oil lamp was lit by Mrs. Neil (Elaine) Bailey, symbolizing the beginning of the World Day of Prayer Service ... a Light from the past ... a symbol of the warmth of the Spirit and the Love & Hope of Jesus Christ! A lovely anniversary cake was served after the service along with MRL ALS PPO SIR. LR IE SEL a - REACHING OUT - - courtesy of - * WAGG - McDERMOTT - PANABAKER FUNERAL HOME, PORT PERRY OUR LAST THINGS? We Canadians have the ability to plan for our financial futures! We are a country which has more life insurance per capita -- we have a program of pension and security payments and retirement funding which is the envy of many modern countries. The co-operation of unions and industry has developed personal financial planning for the future. © We plan for our children's educations, for retirement, for travel and in the last few years -- a new phenomena -- planning for the last things -- our funerals. The last reporting (fall of 1983) to the Ontario Board of Funeral ser- 'vices, the government body under the Ministry of Health which governs funeral homes shows that there are over 90 million dollars placed on deposit with funeral directors to guarantee a pre-arranged funeral. The government is strict about how these funds are received and how they are to be kept. The funeral director must deposit ALL of the funds he receives in a trust fund in a chartered bank or trust company or credit union certified under the Credit Union Act. i The total interest which is derived from the placement of these funds is added to the principal sum and is used to take.care of any increase in the cost of services nr merchandise or disbursements outlined in the agreement. The funeral director is not allowed to use any of these funds in his business. The funds can not be taken out unless requested by the person designated in the agreement or until the death of the person for whom the agreement is made. In. effect. the person placing the funds still owns the money and the funeral director 1s acting not only as.a fiduciary, a financial manager. but also as a guarantor that certain things will be carried out by him in his pro- fessional funeral directing capacity.. It must be remembered that funds placed with a cemetery promotion can include certain funeral-related items such as grave space, a concrete vault, cremation, markers or monuments which are paid for at the time of purchase, often with carrying charges. These funds can not be returned and do not earn any interest. There are some things the funeral director should make clear and things the consumer should resolve before funds are placed. This is both for the protection of the consumer and the funeral director, for you as a consumer will not want the feeling that you are "being taken' and the funeral director as-a community professional will not wany any misunderstandings to affect his good will and his public image. - Ask if the funds are placed to secure maximum interest. - Ask how definite is the casket and service items which will eventually be provided. - Ask does the contract include payments for clothing or a newspuper notice or clergy stipends. - Ask if the funeral director is a member of the Ontario Funeral Service Association which has a bonding arrangement only for member firms - Ask any question about funerals and burial or cremation. for the more you - know. the more informed will be your decision Should you every have a problem about pre-arranged funerals or burials, first. talk it over with the funeral director involved. If you are not satisfied. * contact the Board of Funeral Services, the governing and licensing board for Ontario Funeral Directors, at 25 Grosvenor St. Toronto, Ont.
