Physiotherapist Tina Demmers claims there are many important reasons why staying fit means stay- ing healthy and well, including: 1. The prevention of disease. Lack of physical exercise has been link- _ ed to cardiovascular diseases which translates into shorter life expectan- cy. Physical training can strengthen the heart muscle therefore lowering the risk of heart attack. 2. The human body is built for ac- : tion not rest. Many of our important organs and functions are dimension- 'ed and designed to give service to the muscle during exercise. Therefore optional functioning can only be achieved by participating i regular training. By that I mean two - three 2 hour periods of rational training per week. 3. Physical training can increase oxygen uptake within our heat and muscles. What this means to me and you is that our bodies are regenerated. They feel younger and in fact are younger when compared to people who don't exercise their bodies regularly. 4. People tend to put on weight after the age of 25. This is not only an aesthetic problem but a health liability also. The reason for the weight gain is simple. The number of calories ingested exceed the number used up in activities. Weight gain places stress in important organs such as heart and lungs: places wear and tear on weight bearing joints such as knees and hips. Therefore, physical activity (along with a proper diet) helps our bodies look better and last longer. 5. Quite often we eat poorly as we don't take in the required vitamines, minerals and proteins. One frequent 6. Weak abdominal muscles leave the spine exposed to injurious forces when lifting or carrying a load. Well developed abdominal muscles are an important protective device which can prevent damage to the spinal column therefore avoiding backaches and time off work. 7. Physical activity decreases our stress levels; helps us to blow off steam. This literally adds years to our lives as well. Exercise takes us out of a hyper state and returns us to a more normal relaxed frame of mind. 8. And finally, being fit means looking better, feeling better resulting in increased self con- fidence and self-esteem. In conclusion, it is important to become and to keep fit for all the reasons I've explained. You owe it to yourselves. Participate in the Fitness Challenge and grab this op- portunity to begin and maintain a healthier lifestyle. For those already doing so, strive on and en- courage family and friends to do so 0. eople often ask, "should I have ical check-up before I start a ical activity?" Anyone who is in doubt about the condition of his or her health should see their physi- - cian. Generally speaking, moderate activity such as swimming, bicycl- ing, walking; dancing is less harm- ful than inactivity. It could be said that a medical examination is more necessary for those intending to re- main inactive than for those wan- ting to get into a good phy sical condition. So, forget now and then that there . are things like elevators, buses and cars. Remember that our arms and bodies are'built for motion not rest. Enjoy life with a healthier body. Fitness can be achieved by everybody, young, old and of every physical description. In keeping with Fitness and Well- being, the Physiotherapy Depart- ment is playing a very active role in coordinating events leading up to, and including, the Participaction Fitness Challenge Day, May 27th. ¢f Port Perry 24 Water St S| Plaza.
