24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 24, 1987 AllOn tario semi-final playoff series with Bradford The Malmont Farm Atoms, after losing their first game of the best of five series with Bradford in the semi-final playoffs, rebounded with two straight victories with scores of 5-3 in Bradford and 3-2 at home to now lead the series two games to one. . Game 2 In Bradford 5-3 Victory On Wednesday March 18th, the Malmont Farm Atoms travelled to Bradford for the second game of the series and by putting together 3 solid periods 'of skating and checking came away with a strong 5-3 victory. - In the first period Port Perry scored the only goal as Duane Em- pringham triggered a shot into the top of the net assisted by Lindsay Parry. In the second period Bradford scored three quick goals early to take the lead but by showing Fis Le Rn ~.. The Dowson Valu-mart mixed open Bonspiel was held over the Weekend at Port Perry Curl ing Club with the local rink skipped by Ron Parish coming out on top. Ken Dowson (left) presented plaques and prizes to the winning skip and team members Karen Parish, Dave and Leeann Roth. The team ran up a total of 43 points over three games, to edge out the Earle Mayes rink from Port Perry by half a point. Port Perry Bruton's I.D.A. Petites travelled to the Burrie tour- nament on March 20 to defend their last years championship. ' At Friday nights game the rivalry between Port Perry and Whitby was | -heightened by the fact that Port had | put Whitby out of the Provincial | playoffs. Port scored early and | stayed one goal ahead through most * of the game, but Whitby scored a late goal and took Port by the score of 5-4. The loss put Port in a must win situation with only two games remaining. Saturday's game against Picker- ing saw the girls work hard and with some sharp passing, and fast GA ] A ATTY & 2) ny § skating the opportunities were there. Port shooters were buzzing around the net, but, good goalten- ding by Pickering only allowed Port to pick up one point with a 44 tie. With just seconds left in the game Valerie scored the tieing goal with good passing from Denna & Kelly .- With only a slim chance to stay alive in the tournament Port went out on Sunday and played with determination! The girls were up against Woolwich a team that had won two straight. Port had never played this team and didn't know what to expect but right from the opening whistle everyone knew Port had come to play! The girls played [I - \ Good effort from Petites a fast pace game with everyone playing position ringette! The defence of Kim, Tanya, Jen- nifer and Tracy held off the oppos- ing shooters and passed well out of our end to the forwards. The for- wards of Denna, Kelly, Michelle, Chrissy, Shannon and Valerie put on an exhibition of passing and skating that saw the opposing team fall by the score of 90. After making some excellent saves Amy Parliament received the shut-out for Port Perry. Total goals and assists for the weekend were Denna Lovering 12 goals, 1 assist, Valerie Payne 2 goals, 1 assist, Kelly Menzies 1 goal, 2 assists, Shannon Fox 1 goal, 2 assists, Tanya Towns 1 goal, 1 assist" and Michelle Fitzpatrick 4 assists. We would like to thank Valerie Payne from the Petite *'C"' team for coming to Barrie with us to help us out! Although the tear didn't make it to the championship the highlight of the tournament was the girls effort and passing improving with each game. Hopefully the team carries this winning note to the Provincials oh Aprrar *'**° relentless checking the Green Machine roared back with three goals to finish the period with a 4-3 lead. Scoring was Jeff Card, Sean McEnaney and Lindsay Parry. Assists were given to Jeff Andrews with two and Jeff Card with one. In the third period David Pashley scored the final goal of the game assisted by Chad Garvock which gave the Malmont Atoms a 5-3 vic- tory and evened the series at one I. game each. ¥ Game 3 In Port Perry 3-2 Victory On Friday March 20th, the Mal- mont Atoms hosted Bradford for game 3 of the series. The game pro- ved to be quite a nailbiter right till ~ =the final buzzer as Port Perry edg- ed Bradford by a score of 3-2. In the first period Bradford open- ed the scoring early to take the lead Four tea Game one was a close hard fought battle in which B.J. Donuts tied J & D Carpentry with only seventeen seconds left in the game. Scoring for BJ's were Bill Bridge . - 1 goal, 2 assists, Al Bonner 1 goal, 1 assist, Ed Olsen 1 Bourgeois 1 assist. Counting for J & D were Joe Cur- ran'l goal, 1 assist, Brian Samis and Dave Roth 1 goal each. Assists to Ron Evans and Colin Asselstine, 1 each. In game two the Galley Fish and Chip moved their way into the "*A™ final by defeating Sportsland 4-1. Scorers for Galley were Brian Cane 2 goals, Bill VanCamp and Peter Lane 1 each. Adding assists were Dave Dickson with 3, Bob Tar- botton, Mike Adam, Larry Courtice, and "Doc" Thomson 1 each. The lone marker for Sportsland was Ken Smart from Bob McEachern, In game three Larocque Electric "Electrified" the crowd as they went on to "White-Wash" Crandell's Riverboat 9-2. goal, Dave The Port Perry Novice Ringette team sponsored by Home Hardware recently competed in Regional Playoffs near Peterborough. Although we played with a minimal amount of players and our regular goalie had a sprained ankle, the girls completed the four games with enthusiasm and good sport- smanship won the girls the Good Sportsmanship Award for the Novice Division. They competed against teams from Ajax. Whitby and twe Oshawa ~ Atoms bounce back for two wins Machine got on the scoreboard by scoring the next two goals. Scoring was Jeff Andrews unassisted and Duane Empringham assisted by Scott Heasman. But late in the period Bradford, refusing to give up, scored to tie the game and set the stage for the third period. At the 9:28 mark of the' third period Jeff Card blasted a shot by the Bradford goalie for the winning goal, assisted by Sean McEnaney. The Port Perry squad skated hard and managed to hang on for the vic- tory which gives them a two games to one lead in the series. Potting for Crandell's were Ron Jeffrey from Richie LeFort and Donavan Smith from Keijo Kin- nunen and Richie LeFort. Game four saw Smiths Contrac- ting put it to Compton Cable T.V. by defeating them 5-1. Counting for Smiths were Brian Callery 2 goals, Bruce Smith 1 goal, 1 assists, Wayne Norton 1 goal, 1 ssist, and Larry Page 1 goal. Other assists to Larry Jackson. John Foster, John Connors and Reid Stainton all with one. The lone marker for Compton was Rick Olaisen unassisted. Next week Larocque Electric play BJ Donuts in the "B"" Division final at 8:45, while Smiths and Galley follow for the **A'" Division final.
