Ce cd lu a __ Lindsay agrees to help out Footbridge will be raised The Rainbow Bridge will be rais- ed this summer! ; The good news came about last Monday night when Mayor Jerry Taylor and councillor Howard Hall approached Lindsay Council asking for their assistance in the project. The Lindsay footbridge, which spans the Scugog River, is about two feet lower than other bridges in the area and has been a thorn in the side of boaters for many years. Because of the low bridge, many boats wishing to visit Lake Scugog and Port Perry have been unable to make their way down the river But this problem will be solved early this summer when local con- tractor Karl Herder will take on the job of raising the bridge enough to allow larger boats past this obstacle. At Lindsay council last Monday, Mayor Taylor explained that he was requesting their support on behalf of the boaters and users of the Trent Waterways System, which did not include himself as he does not own . Mayor Jerry Taylor was successful in getting support from Lindsay council last week when they agreed to put $3,000 towards - the bridge being raised. A few months ago Lindsay council refus- ed to help with the project financially, but they had a change of heart this past week. Total cost of the project is estimated at $13,800 and Scugog Council has agreed to $5,000; Scugog Chamber of Commerce $1,500; and the local marinas another $2,500. Mayor Taylor suggested that the project should be of interest to Lind- say as the work being done on the bridge should extend its life and he felt Lindsay should put $3,000 towards this very important project. "Although we realize that the raising of the Rainbow Bridge may be of more importance to Scugog Township than yourself, we feel Lindsay will derive some benefit with increased boat traffic once boaters know they can go farther down the system," Mayor Taylor explained. The request for the financial sup- port received no opposition and Councillor Chester moved that coun- cil approve the money, saying "this is a very reasonable request. We will be getting over $8,000 worth of work for $3,000." Councillor Rodd went one step fur- ther saying he was almost embar- rassed to have had Mayor Taylor * come all the way to Lindsay to make this presentation. "This is one of the best deals the Town of Lindsay has had for some time," he concluded. A request for financial support by Scugog Township council by letter a few months ago was turned down by. Lindsay council. The project is now slated for near the end of June, after school is out so there will -be a limit to the in- convenience. It is estimated that it will take about two weeks to com- plete the project. i . PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 31, 1987 -- 3 Clocks go ahead It's that time again! Yes, it's time to turn your clocks ahead by one hour as Daylight Savings time comes into effect this year about three weeks earlier than in past years. Don't forget to turn your clock ahead this Sunday, April 5 sometime after midnight. The extra hour you lose in sleep will be welcomed in the evening as the sun will not set until after eight o'clock. Should you forget, when you arrive for church, the rest of the congregation will just be leaving. Taxes goingup (From page 1) of larger items which could impact on the local budget this year.
