She just got up and started dancing in the "mass fling" at the Games. Her picture appeared in the local papers there and she was invited back the following sum- mer to take part in the Games program. Highland dancing can take several different forms. The most popular and widely known is the fling, but other types include the sword dance, shewn triues, Irish jig and horn pipes. All are extremely demanding both physically and mentally. In competitions, the judges are tough with marks award- ed for techniques, presentation and appearance. Jennifer' s mother, Marion, says her daughter seems to have an ex- cellent personality for competitive dancing. She works very hard in preparing, but if she doesn't win, she takes it all in stride and doesn't let it bother her. It was Mrs. Blackburn who got Jennifer started in dancing. She's an Edinburgh native, an accomplished Highland dancer herself who started at a very early age. Mrs. Blackburn is keeping a very watchful eye on her daughter's pro gress as a competitive dancer. She dcesn't want Jennifer to reach the point where dancing is no longer tun Jennifer has worked hard for the trophies she's won in competitions She takes 2! week at Gillian's Highland Dancing School in Oshawa, and she spends countless hours at home practising. "1 even practise my dancing in the Kitchen," she said with a big 'smile last week. In competitions, the judges look not only for a dancer's ability, but overall appearance as well. The hair must be set a certain way. Earrings and other jewellery are not allowed. The kilt must be-a certain length. Jennifer wears the Blue Menzies tartan kilt, light blue in colour, with matching knee-length stockings and a jacket of Royal blue trimmed with gold lace. The kilt and jacket are handmade and expensive. The stockings have to. be ordered from either Scotland or Ireland. Over the next few weeks, Jennifer ~ will be entering several competi- tions, but the one she is working towards is May 23 in Almonte, Michigan. This event attracts the top Highland dancers from the United States and Canada, and Jennifer says she would be more than pleas- - OPEN HOUSE - THERESIA's ° Wedding Cakes Until May 30th, 1987 Display 10% Discount On Bookings (with this ad) SATURDAY & SUNDAY APRIL 11 & 12 12 Noon until 5 PM FREE COFFEE & CAKE -- EVERYONE IS WELCOME! She loves to sing and she enjoys riding. Some- day, she hopes to have her own horse. And someday, she hopes to make that trip to Edinburgh to compete against the best Highland dancers in the world.
