12 -- PORT PFRRY STAR -- Tuesday, April 14, 1987 Mike Brock has ball Down Under (From page 5) August and spends about 8 - 10 weeks with various Rotarians, myself included. They all arrived at the end of our winter looking tan. ; ed but tired. Each student was met by various representatives of the host clubs, in- cluding many host families, and were taken to the homes of their first hosts. Within a few days Mike was enrolled at the Technical Col: lege in Frankston, and soon made many new friends. It soon became clear that Mike was very sports oriented and it didn't take long for him to become involved in many sporting activities, including board- sailing, pony trekking, camping and cross-country four wheel driving (as a passenger!) I have included a b/w picture of Mike at a recent cricket match (bet- ween the Rotary Clubs of Seaford and ourselves) in which our Cana- dian hockey player performed very creditably, and in fact scored the winning run, and for our team as well! This in fact was a fine display of grit and determination from Michael as he was under a real disadvantage during the whole match... Seaford would not allow him to wear his ice skates One of the many surprises that Mike has had during his stay here .. was at Christmas time. As it hap pened, he was staying with my fami- ly at a caravan (trailer) park at a beach on the south coast of New South Wales, over 600 kms from Frankston. On Christmas morning we all exchanged gifts, (we go each vear to this spot with about 6 other families from our local area so there are quite a few in our group). When all the gifts had been opened, | gave Mike. a small gift-wrapped parcel, which, when opened proved to be an audio cassette tape from his family & friends in Port Perry!! (I had thought up the plan in September, sent the tape to Mr. and Mrs. Brock who arranged the various "'greetings" to be taped and return- ed to me via a fellow conspirator in the Rotary Club, so that Michael would have no idea of any cor- respondence arriving in the mail box) Needless to say, between the laughs and tears of all the recogniz- ed voices, the distance separating our two countries was shortened for . a time at least (and I have heard he has replayed it from time to time). Michael Brock has been fairly + busy with travel so far in Australia. Apart from his journey at Christmas with our family (I have NAIL SPECIALIST -- COME IN AND HAVE ONE NAIL DONE FREE -- a wife, Lesley, and two boys, David 15 and Paul 13) he has been driven across to Perth in Western Australia, for the America's Cup in Fremantle (we'll say no more about that episode!) They breakfasted in the clubhouse of the Royal Perth Yacht Club before the start of the first race and then joined the tens of thousands of people from all over the world, thronging the docks and other attractions of the, for a time at least, centre of the yachting *world. Mike viewed the 2nd race from a slightly better vantage point...a private helicopter! His host family, Neil Black's, then took Mike from Perth, up the west coast of the continent to Darwin, from where they flew back, a plea- sant litle round trip of about 13,000 kms! On their journey they en- countered severe flooding at the Ord river, where they had to wait for three days for the flood waters to recede. He has visited a crocodile farm where Mike stopped at the snack bar and came out with that immortal one liner "Get me a crocodile sandwich, and make it snappy." He has also flown over the countryside used in the filming of 'Crocodile Dundee' and seen the world's largest diamond mine, the Argyle mine. Michael's love of water was taken care of with swim- ming in many rock pools and splashing around under waterfalls. Talking of waterfalls, in November last year (our spring) about 20 Rotarians and Mike, drove up into the highlands! of Victoria, 'Man from Snowy River Country,' to spend two days White Water Rafting down the Mitta Mitta river. Mike en- Joyed this adventure as he has had experience with canoeing in Canada. As you can see from the above sample of his activities, Mike has not been still for very long on his trip ° only, his fellow Canadign Exchange Students, but also Rotary Exchange Students from all over the world.
